Rover gearbox

I viewed a Griff at the weekend. It was a 400 with a Rover gearbox. The gear chnages going forwards were smooth and slick but engaging reverse was impossible. "Press the gear lever down and push the lever left" the owner instructed but try as I could, I could not press the lever down. He did not seem to have any trouble. Is there a knack to it, was I doing it wrong or was the linkage knackered?

Any comments?

No need to push down. Reverse is simply to the left of first. It's worth selecting first then reverse each time to avoid graunching.

Ditto, mine seems to be happier with a horizontal wiggle of neutrals before engaging.

Nothing to worry about.

Yep. No pressing. Select first or third, then left & forward for reverse.

At least I'll know for the next one I look at.

You may realize from the replies that you really should be looking for a 430. Dont get confused when the next one you look at has a Ford box :-)

Hi Profstoff, if my work situation picks up then I am also after a Griff, I`ve driven Clives and was very impressed, happy hunting, hope you get a good one.
