Playing VCD discs on laptop???
Discussion
Ok, please, PH massive...
I did run a search but nothing came up that I could use.
So, I've got a Sony Vaio that's only few weeks old and almost top of the range, i.e. not the Blueray one!
I popped a new and legally purchased (don't ask) pre-recorded VCD.
Damn thing won't play, it just opens an explorer window showing the folders and file lists, that's it.
As far as the bit of research I've been able to do leads me to believe that I should just plonk it in the DVD tray, close it, sit back and enjoy!!!
Any helpful or otherwise ideas will be greatly appreciated.
Thanks peeps...

AFAIK, Windows Media Player will play VCD files.
Try opening the MPEGAV folder and double clicking on the .DAT file. Windows may ask you what program you would like to open - select Media Player. If not, try re-associating .DAT files with Windows Media Player (Options > File Types).
Alternatively, is there an 'Open With' option when you right click on the .DAT file ? If so, select Open With >> Windows Media Player.
Another thing to try - open Media Player, select File > Open and select the .DAT file in the MPEGAV folder.
If all of the above fails, then there are plenty of freebie VCD players which can be downloaded from the 'net.

Hey SS2,
Your WMP advice worked superbly on the VCD issue, thanks tons.
VLC is still chugging away as I speak seemingly trying to create a monster swapfile thing if you understand.
As you can probably tell I'm a serious newbie to all this.
I'm trying to run a DVD that 'InterVideo for Sony Vaio' had regional issues with.
I'm thinking of shutting down VLC and letting WMP have a go.
Had too much vino collapso with my ruby tonight here in Delhi.
Probably get it all running and then fall asleep.
