Starter Motor cost and fitting costs.

Following on from my recent post "Starting Problem 2" it has been established that it is the solinoid on the starter that has failed. How mucn should i expect to pay for a replacement and the typical cost for fitting? Any indication would be helpful to make sure that i am not seen off!

I paid £157 + vat I think and about £50/£70 fitting.

Is the solenoid on the starter fixed then?
Can you just not replace it?
If it is the solenoid then how come the long push works for you?
I thought that the starter just turns the engine over - its usually the gearing mechanisms that go.
Have you tried replacing the Big Fuse ?
Souns a bit odd this - but there again I may be talking Boll^x..

i followed most of the advice given by all you good fellas including the joining of the red and white wires and it did not start with the long push, (although it did on a couple of occasions) thats TVR magic for you. i had the starter tested today and was advised that the part of the solinoid that pulls the starter in was not working but the bit that spins (the circut anyway) was ok and that a new solinoid is probably all that is needed but are not available on their own. according to the manufacturers they have upgraded the solinoids now due to premature failure in the past. the price i have been quoted for a new unit is £230+vat this is not a recon unit.
i am getting the starter taken out and tested prior to ordering a new one.
with regards to the big fuse, it was not long changed during a service but the autotrition advised that there was power to the soliniod. my delema is brand new for £230, or £168 for mine to be reconditioned. there is something about the idea of getting mine recoditioned later, having 12 months warranty now on a new unit so if it does pack in in a couple of years at least i will have a spare. And as we all know if you carry a spare the original never breaks down!!!

2.5 - 3hrs!!!!! What are they doing?
At worst it's fuel rail off, and a few scraped knuckles. I concur with Jules, for someone who's done it before it's only an hour and a half max.

Yep,I did mine at the weekend and took just over 2 hours with a bit of pratting about and arse scratching thrown in.

At what labour charge though ?
If it's a fiver an hour, you're on a winner
£38/hr +vat and it is a good hour drive there and of course the same back.

Said it before and again, the Automedon guys are second to none. They are reasonably priced, very friendly, will bend over backwards to help.
