What am I doing wrong?

Most every time I connect my 700 to the computer I end up with it locked up.
All is fine when in tomtom home with backups etc completed.
I think it must be something to do with how I exit and disconnect.
I close Home.
Select the icon 'safe to remove hardware'
when that clears I unplug the usb lead and it just goes back to the 'GO' splash screen and hangs there.
Had to press reset twice before it would come back to life.

Any ideas?
