Put MA chip in myself and set everything up myself and everything to me seemed hunky dorry. Felt like she was running better and alot smoother low down.
Anyhow booked into Austecs for a RR session with MA so he could fine tune it.
first few runs and a bit if fettling and 214bhp and 260 lbs so the old BB was very poorly.
seemed there may have been a problem with a couple of the injectors so had them all cleaned ( couldn't afford to change at the time).

That seemed to cure it and after a few more runs and fettling at the 15th Run MA and Paul managed to get upto 276 and 315lbs

Anyhow forget the figures when I took it for a quick spin while Paul and MA Tidied up and closed up the workshop ( I had been there about 7 hours) Boy did the car feel different It just seemed to suddenly pull all the through the gears a hell of lot better and the mid range was something else. And a hell of lot smoother low down and in traffic etc.

In MHO it was well worth it and MA and Austecs treated me and the Car great and I would allways recommend them and wish they where a bit closer to me so a could get the car fettled a bit more often

Added bonus is you can now see the Pheonix about down there along with Tim of ACT whos sometimes about.

Thats probably more than you wanted to know about the Tornado Chip experience. I like to know if BB is still the same as then? have I just got used to it.

Why do you want it 'chipped' Clive? If your just after optimising a std car, then theres definately no need to pay so much for a tornado chip. The std TVR chip is very good, despite what some might tell you,and dom at TVR Power still sells a range of std and not quite so std chips,at very reasonable cost.If you get a std car on a decent rolling road and have the timing and Co optimised,it'll run like a dream. The type of gains that Petros had from his Tornado chip, can easily be made just from setting the engine up properly.
If your thinking of modifying then you should really consider an aftermarket ecu, which these days is also very cost effective as it will be much cheaper than Tornado chipping, and allow you to map the ignition(a very good thing).
Have you seen the costs of Tornado chipping yetyikes!!! Dont forget the costs of subsequent re-mapping for future mods also.

I swapped my MA chip for a standard map from TVR Power and gained 20 bhp. And driveability. And proper idle behaviour. I'd call TVR Power first. That said, each case is different and having spoken to Mark he is an exceptionally nice, helpful bloke.

Wow you must have had 2 injectors not working AT ALL to get only 214 out of a car capable of 276 (6/8ths of 276bhp = 207bhp) .. well done, top effort thumbup
you're lucky you hadn't melted a piston with that kind of mixture discrepency

hmmm, youv`e got me unsure now, I assumed that the MA chip would be the best route, I must add that I would have this done by him at Austec, didn`t know you could do this yourself and wouldn`t have the confidence to try it to be honest, basically Ive done a few mods over the winter, with a view to eventually having it chipped as an end result thinking that this is the best way to sort out any fuel map problems that might exist, so far I have added or changed;
carbon fibre trumpets, enlarged phlenum,(still have standard airflow meter) Act induction kit, piper 285 camshaft, magnecour leads, dizzy cap rotor and plugs ect, removed precats and cam coated manifolds, bosche coil.
I think thats most of it, would just like it professionally set up running efficiently.

if any type or make of chip is used, does`nt it still need to be set up properly on a rolling road?

Clive,

Over the winter I had similar done, but because it needed a new cam. In fact, all the same mods, plus the MA chip. This equates to 316bhp at the fly and the torque was well up too. It's not cheep as you get stung twice (Ma's time £350+ chip£350 & then the cost of the Austec rolling road at an hourly rate).
Worth it though. Mine is a different beast now. So much more power, better responce throughout the range and any gear. However, there is still some shunt low down which they have said should not be there and that the mapping will get rid of it.....3rd time lucky hopefully!!!!

I have the Tornado chip in my car, all mapped out by Mark. The car pull very well, from 1000rpm in all gears and makes a very respectable torque curve and power. Figurs aside, the cr isn't tuned for power, but is really nice to drive.

Plus as said before Mark is a really nice bloke. When my alternator packed up, he spent much of his time on the Sunday of the Griff Growl, helping to get me back on the road. Definitley reccomend him.

IMHO, it sounds like the first step is to make sure your car is fit & well, but who can you trust to do this when Mark is the only one with access to the Lucas ECU (& prepared to fettle the injectors/AFM)?

It still seems that mapped ignition is the most desireable upgrade to the ECU in my book. I personally cant see why anyone would pay for Marks chip etc. instead of putting the money towards an ECU capable of doing what you really want (ignition / mapping at your vendor of choice / simple diagnosticss freely available / no AFM?....).

Sounds like I dropped lucky then - my car ran on WRC's dyno last month and pulled 276bhp / 315ft-lb as standard

Clive - if you want to just swap the chip in the ECU for one you've bought from Power or wherever, I'd happily do this for you if you aren't confident at dismantiling the electronics.

I tend to agree with Mike than an aftermarket ECU is the way forward for serious tuning. Slightly more cost initially, but you start to benefit from the additional cost very quickly. It's not the solution for everyone though.

Thanks Dave, and everone else for your input, I`ve just had a long chat with Paul at Austec, and providing the mot goes without to much of a problem I`ll book it in with him, I`m not necessarily looking for super bhp figures, just want to get the best out of the car and have it running smoothly at the same time, so I think its the best way to go.

now where`s the piggy bankhehe

Can anyone suggest a good value aftermarket ecu?

I'm just running in a new V8D crank assembly and pistons on my (now) 5.2l Griff and this is probably gonna be the next area in which I need to upgrade

Clive - give us a shout when you're at Austec. I'm not that far away and we could get together.

I'm using a VEMS Genboard 3.3 - probably the best feature/price ratio around at the moment (but I am biased on this!!) It's not the easiest to install and configure, and there are stills some slight rough edges to the product - these are all being solved and can usually be applied to already installed ECUs in the form of software upgrades

My 500 will do 30mpg on a long run after the installation of the Tornado chip. Personally I think it pays for myself.

I had the car tuned on the standard chip and although the tornado chip didn't gain me much bhp, the improvement in the torque band was incredible.
