Does anyone konw a cost-effective way of going out via portsmouth-caen (or one of those other ports round there) and coming back Calais-Dover)?

In my experience, you are better off driving to Dover from Portsmouth... My grandparents live west of Caen, and I worked out it is cheaper for me to cross Dover-Calais than Portsmouth-Caen. This is using Norfolk Line.

Might be worth seeing what they offer on a day return and arrange not to come back once you are in France...

Try LD Lines from Portsmouth, then Speedferries, P&O, Seafrance, Norfolk lines and the tunnel for the return trip.

I'm off to Paris in a couple of weeks, going out on the tunnel but back on Speedferries, it doesn't make much difference.
