Hm. Our recently acquired Disco is playing up again.... The dealer has (again) said he will sort it, but natural curiosity leads me to ask here if anyone has any ideas - the ABS warning light never lights at any time. IIRC, it's supposed to come on with ignition, blink once, then stay illuminated till the vehicle reaches 5 mph. It was working ok when we test drove and I think must have worked for MOT. It may be significant that follwing an initial MOT fail - negligible rear brake performance - the balance valve was replaced and the system bled. Subsequently passed MOT. Could this have triggered the problem?

Any wisdom gratefully received!!

No idea about the fault, but you do remember correctly about its 'double' test - I thought mine was knackered when I got it 'till I read the manual.

Would have thought this should 'fail safe' though and go to permanently on rather than off (bulb?).

Sounds like the bulb is burned out.

FWIW .. my rangie (same basic system i believe) ABS light will come on with ignition on. It will then not go out till 5mph or has been running for a little while.

May be just that the computer was not reset after the work done to the brakes.

I know that i had an airbag fail light on my dash for ages after i hoiked the battery out to jumpstart something else. reset of electrics solved the problem.

(that or the bulb has gone)

Just a quick update - took Disco out in the snow, and the ABS works perfectly.. so must be the warning light bulb in the dash - my thinking is: The ABS shuts down completely if there's a fault, so if the system is working, then there cannot be a fault.

Haynes says that I must disconnect the battery before pulling the instrument panel to change the bulb - is this really necessary? Maybe they are just being extra cautious?

No, not necessary as long as you are reasonably cautious and have the ignition turned off.
Haynes are always over cautious. They probably suggest disconnecting the battery before opening the bonnet....
