Microsoft Money, and alternatives
Discussion
I tried MS Money for a while and also ended up doing my own spreadsheet, the main benefit is that you can tailor it to your exact requirements.
I have two sheets one for plans over the coming year - mainly for big purchases and another sheet for regular expenses and income. I used to keep another sheet with all my bank account entries but I never really got much out of it so stopped doing it.
The benefit of having a spreadsheet is that you learn a bit of excel and it forces you to think logically how things should be reflected. It does become a bit addicitive.
On www.moneysavingexpert.com there is a budgeting spreadsheet which is a good place to start in thinking about what you spend. Fairly frighetining as well.
