Having an exhaust made.
Discussion
My exhaust is in a dreadful state, and my car failed an MoT yesterday because I had to fit a temporary exhaust to try and get the MoT.
The car failed on noise and emissions, I say fail in fact we abandoned the MoT as it was obvious that the HydroCarbons and lambda levels wouldn't get close. How do I tell if the Cats are knackered? I can see through the comb. but other than that I wouldn't have a clue.
I've weighed up the options from various suppliers and I'm edging towards a made to fit system, including rear skid plate etc.
Has anyone else had a system made for their car and if so are you happy and what price did you pay? I just don't want to get taken for a mug.
Also anyone repositioned the cats furter down the car to give more space?
Thanks
Tim

No idea on cost really, but Hayward & Scott are over the water in Basildon, Essex...
i had a bespoke system made for the SLK, with 100cell cats was about 1200 quid and they had the car for 3 days inc fitting it - Highly recommend them.
You could always get an off the shelf jobbie as well.

Have you discussed what you want with Tim Lamont? One option might be to tee things up with JP Exhausts to use some of the ACT standard designs + whatever customisation you want.
Steve.
Steve.
Problem is, the system on the car at present doesn't sit quite right and there has been a lot of damage to the cans due to bottoming out.
Also, if you analyse it, a full 'off the shelf' system is £580ish + delivery and you still have to fit it, so £760 (which is what I've been quoted) for a bespoke system doesn't seem too bad.

I got a system made from mid section back. cost £350 fitted. got it done at a local garage but it was powerflow equipment they used. Main reason for getting it made was so the two pipes came out even as i've heard that ready made systems can be a nightmare to fit as every car is slightly different. got to say they made an amazing job and it sounds amazing.

Definitely worth a call then mate - Tim already has some ideas about changes to be made to the existing system and they might line up with what you need. The way I see it is if you have a problem, chances are everyone else has a similar problem too. You might be able to get a good price and things made to your requirements.

Just to clarify something you haven't had an ACT System, you probably have JP sports tails/ link pipes ?, although similar this isn't the same as our own system.

Sorry Tim, wasn't casting aspersions agains your products, I have done nothing but sing the praises of both you and EVERYTHING I've bought from you. You have never been anything but helpful and your products have ALWAYS been first class.
SORRY again, I'll go edit my posting. have alse emailed Steve and asked him to edit his post.
As an aside, your 3" system, do you have any track day cans for it? Obviously it adds a few more quid if I have to replace my current ones.

Thanks Julian,
The chap just put the sensor up the exhaust and the PC was all over the place, but I think he'd already decided that it was way to loud, and I would agree with him. We didn't even get as far as testing the emissions properly.
Its a garage I've used for years and they are very fair.

Tim, get a bespoke one made, I did on my old Cerb and it reaped excellent gains, certainly above what we originally expected.
I loosely based the design on the standard JP Sports exhaust but increased the bore size of the pipes to 2.5" (ACT Big Bore and SP systems are 2.25", Standard sports is 2.125" ), this stayed the same until at the tailpipes where we increased the bore to 3". I also added a brace between the two rear pipes just before the back boxes, this gives the system a fair bit more rigidity and restricts movement. Being bespoke means that it can be made to fit which is always a bonus. Mine was bespoke but that didn't stop Joolz adding his input after it had been fitted, this resulted in him reshaping the "s" section where the straight pipes meet the back section. I posted some pics a while back, if you get time dig them out and have a look.
From what I have seen and heard of the ACT and SP systems then they are both vastly superior than the Sports Pipes, especially in build quality and noise. So if you can't get one built then these are the options to go for.
Jules.

They may be fair but they might not know that the cerb doesn't have to pass a standard emissions test.

I know what you're saying Julian, it was just a disaster from start to finish tbh, with the cats refitted they were touching the heat sheilding and causing smoke and making me very nervous after 2 fires, the car smelt, it was noisy and I was in a BAD mood!
Anyway, I've taken the plunge and have just booked it into Powerspeed in Hothfield, I have read good reports so I'll report back.
Chap I met seemed to know his stuff, recognised the Cerb' exhaust from a pic on my 'phone of the old one, he mentioned, unprompted, that it was the AJP8 and flat plane so no balance pipe etc. etc. (no, debate about the validity of a balance pipe please!), which all got the thumbs up as far as I'm concerned.
Anyway it's with them for 2-3 days from the 19th.
I've got ideas about moving cats, extra bracing, and skid plates etc. so we shall see the outcome.
Tim
