My Cooper S (52-reg) has done 45k miles and the drive belt on the nearside of the engine, which I assume drives the alternator and supercharger, has started making a 'whirring' noise, i.e. it doesn't sound like a pulley bearing.

I have had a quick look at the belt with a view to changing it but there doesn't appear to be much room in there. Has anybody changed this belt themselves and can therefore let me know whether it is a DIY job for a competent mechanically minded person or is it an engine out job for a Mini specialist? Or does somebody know of a helpful website that has instructions?

Hopefully the belt is on the offside of the engine...

The belt has probabely started to do hard-will have a glazed look to the flat side of the belt.

There is a special tool to move the tensioner back-its about a foot long with a fork at the end.You push the tensioner back and put a 2.5mm pin about 40mm long with a right angle init in the rear of the tensioner(theres a small hole that is visable from the top)to hold it back.

I have managed to do the job without the bar by pulling down on the belt from underneath(If doing this just be careful not to pinch your fingers)and with the help of someone else got them to put the pin in.once that is done then its wip the belt off(bit tight around the charger)remeber which route it took, fit the new one and release the tensioner

Sorry, yes my mistake, of course it is the offside! Many thanks for your advice - I'll be replacing it with a new belt soon.
