Well

Not been about the last few weeks - down in the garage removing bits to get shot blasted and leading up to the inevitable body off.

Outriggers were rusty and I had this gut feeling that they had rusted out ontop of the tubes. Hitting them with the hammer gently there was a very prominate dull thud around the front outriggers where Chim's normally fail.

Drop the chassis from the body and the hammer only had to look at the rust and it went through it.

Well a new chassis could be up to £3000 so the only route forward now is to get the glue gun warmed up (minding fingers) some double sided tape and a washing up bottle.

Had to share my anoyance with somebody - feel better now.

Now to find somebody to renew outriggers - TVR Car Parts are on the job with a quote.

Any advice much appreciate.

Pictures will follow.

In the same situation...i noticed a hole in my outriggers a few months ago...so now i am going to strip my chim down and going to replace everything, seats carpet, trim, resparay and am making a very nice stainless steel chassis and wishbones...!!!!

Luckily i can do all the work myself so it wont be to bad on the pocket!!!!

Hi Andy, I guess this is the subject of the thread you have running in NEPH land, sorry, I haven't read that one.

The idea of a StSt chassis has been discussed here before and there were a lot of good reasons to thinks carefully about that choice. Where mild steel will flex when put under twisting load StSt will split and crack. It's also significantly heavier. Oh and your insurance will be void unless you declare the modification.

You may have already considered these down side issues but the last person to consider this chose not to do it in the end because the cons outweighed the pros. Just food for thought.

Hi bob

Apparently peter wheeler had a car made with a stainless chassis...not 100% sure on that one.

Also if you get the right grade of stainless it will give the same flexability as mild steel, again not 100% sure on this but no doubt someone will be along to put me right!!!

In fact i wouldnt mind meeting up with you for a chat if you have got some time spare in the next few days????

got my fingers burnt BIG STYLE by some rip off merchant up here in Newcastle, but then i made the mistake of having the cash in the pocket and brought the first car i drove.

Hindsight i should have joind PH first and then got someone to look at cars with me.

On the plus side i have learnt a lot about chims and love working on them. Now i just want to strip it down and start again....new chassis, respray and a retrim of the interior. Hopefully it will be like a new car when i am done!

Sy,

Sorry to hear of this, not a good situation been there and done that.

I took the body off and did a total rebuild, kept the original chassis, had the outriggers replaced, then hot zinc sprayed, + shed loads of POR15 and hammerite on top then waxoil....god luck with it.

I avoided the partial body lift and replace route, mainly because I wanted to do a proper job of it.

good luck

Steve.

Thats what i was thinking
If you are going to do a body lift then you might as well go that lillte bit further and take the body off...

I am making stainless wishbones first with nylon bushes first and as i use my car every day i shall be able to clock some serious miles up on them to see how they perform.

So by the time i have finished it will hopefully be rot free!!!!

The traditional issue with nylon bushes is that they are too hard for road use and end up knocking the mounting holes oval.
