Impreza Import petrol
Discussion
So im looking into getting an Impreza Import. I have been looking for a while now and i have managed to find a good one but i need some advice.
I have been told that as the car is an import you can only fill it up using Shell V Power because japanese petrol is different (higher octane 100ron??). Is this true and would I do the engine harm if i was to fill the tank up with tescos 95ron for example or BP's Ultimate petrol?
If this is true, is there any way round this like a ecu upgrade or re map?

BP Ultimate is high octane to, so you'd be fine with that as well.

So i'll be ok filling it with BP Ultimate then?

No you wont..
I am not scaring you at all but to be honest the only safe way looking after the car ok crappy UK fuel is either carry arounf some octan booster everytime you fill up, or go to a good tuner who can sort your car out with a UK Fuel Map.
For the impreza this uses a piece of software called ECUtek, this can also be a easy way of getting more power from the car.
Depends on where you are to get the car mapped.

ECUTek only works on 1999 and later cars. ScoobyECUs work for any Imprezas up to and including 1996. For the in between models, there isn't much option but an after market ECU or piggyback.
I can say with reasonable confidence that 97/98 RON fuel is OK in std (This does include the exhaust) jap imports provided a few precautions (like fitting & using a knock link) are taken.

So in other words filling the car with 97 ron is like having a full english every saturday morning.
Its not really gonna hurt or kill you but there's always that chance it could give you a heart attack at 50 or the bacon could get stuck in your throat and cause you to choke and keel over?!

102 RON is twice the price i think. Stick with Shell V-Power - 99RON or better still go to the main Tesco in Northampton (if you live here that is) and buy their 99RON super currently at 88.9 ppl. I have been using the Tesco stuff since it came out there and my Scooby loves it.
P.S. Millers CVL Octane Booster (£7.50 per bottle) adds 4points to what used to be Shell Optimax 98RON, so add that to Tesco 99Ron and it should hit 102RON easily.
Much cheaper than BP Ultimate 102RON (£2.42pl) back in April last year!!
Edited to add: When E85 Biofuel is more common have your car converted to run both (little box of tricks or Remap will do it) and that is suppose to be somewhere around 105 - 107RON. Very low emissions and shedloads of xtra power (upto 30%) on some cars. Scoobies should benefit from bigtime hikes in power but your MPG will be a lot worse although it should cost the same as super. Sounds good to me!!

We use the millers octane booster in our cars, One thing you do not want to do is ever, ever run your car on crap fuel. Otherwise good by engine. You do need to up your ron, and Millers is the best way. I ave a couple of boxes here, if you want a box to keep in the back of the car let me know.

I think that statement is a bit of scare mongering if you ask me... I have seen plenty of scoobs running on standard unleaded and have done for all of there life and still have yet to see an engine go bang.
But if you are talking about a modded car then i would agree with you, it is important to use as high octane as possible to prevent engine problems.
If you take the valves out of a scooby thats been run on 95RON unleaded for the last 10 years you will see a heavy build-up of carbon deposits (black and rock hard).
If you have been running your car on Super 97 - 99RON for the last 10 years you will see the same valves come out clean as a whistle. Higher RON fuel is not only much better for standard WRX or STi Scooby engines but it will also stop detonation (knock/pinking) even after a good hard drive when the engine is red hot.
You're very likely to get detonation on 95RON after a good hard drive, which could potentially screw your pistons, burn valves and will probably at the very least send your Scooby's ECU into safe mode. I wouldn't recommend 95RON in anyones scooby so use it at your peril!!
Go to my local scooby dealer and the service manager will tell you that the higher 97 - 99RON is the way to go for any scooby, and he drives a standard STi himself!! Even the little sticker inside my fuel filler flap says use super-unleaded and i drive a standard WRX Sportwagon. You will notice the difference in go. My Scooby is 215bhp standard and i wouldn't be surprised if it churns out a bit more than that because of the 99RON.
I must book a rolling road day one of these days

Stevie, the OP is talking about an import rather than a UK car.
They are mapped differently.
Is that not a rather sweeping statement ? 99RON was not available for >10 years of Impreza availability in the UK.
All 'classic' UK Subarus bar the P1 were produced with a map designed for 95RON.
P1s required 97RON and that was also recommended for PPPed cars.
My PPPed UK classic never, ever showed any KL activity on 97RON in >10K track miles.
Imports are another issue entirely, as I posted earlier.
All 'classic' UK Subarus bar the P1 were produced with a map designed for 95RON.
P1s required 97RON and that was also recommended for PPPed cars.
