Im really quite interested in trying my hand at playing with CAD design. Doesnt have to be mega complex ie: no need to work out drag coeffiecience or aerodynamic structures, just a simple design platform so I can have fun pretending to be clever

Anyone got any suggestions before I go looking???

Ta me old muckas thumbup

For learning the basics - PTC Pro/Desktop would be a good start - although you may as well go the whole hog and get Pro/Eng as Pro/D gets limited after a couple of months of use.

You could also try Solidworks, some people say it's easier to pick up, but I don't know as I went from Pro/E to Solidworks so knew how things worked, I just had to adapt my way of working.

Solidworks and Catia gets my vote, solidworks is the easier of the two and slightly lower level but will still get the job done very very well, you can also get cosmos works with SW and you can then do some basic FEA and CFD

Another vote for SolidWorks here. Very intuitive and nice to work with.
