I'm far from a computer genius (as will become apparant to the PH massive very shortly) and I think that I may have had a helping hand in the death of my mum's computer (oops!).

We have a wireless broadband router which is linked to her PC by wire, and provides wireless internet access for my laptop.

The other night Mrs B couldn't get onto the internet ~ it just kept saying that the internet wasn't available. She asked me to look at it given that I have been nominated as being in charge of all things internet related. I should add at this stage that my laptop and the internet were working perfectly. I'd previously had a problem with my internet access and had been told by a computer-bod to do a system restore. So that's what I did on my mum's computer. It took me about 5 or 6 attempts to get it to restore as it kept trying to do it, but then saying that it wasn't able to complete it.

Anyway, it eventually did the restore, and after the PC was restarted, it had lost my mum's desktop background, and had defaulted to the original one. The internet is still not working and all of my mum's files have disappeared, as have some programs, although others that have been installed by Mrs B are still there. Go figure! We've done a virus scan today with a negative result, and whilst she has most of her stuff on backup disks and is willing to reinstall whatever she can, I'm concerned that the loss of only certain files and settings is symptomatic of something else.

Does anyone have any suggestions or advice? Please don't get too technical (if possible) as I'm far from an expert! Thanks to anyone who may be able to assist.

I didn't think a system restore would also 'remove' files, doesn't it only change programs back?

Look in c: documents and settings. There will be two fodlers with similar names, one with all her old stuff in it.

System restore is mroe trouble than it's worth usually.
