Golf Gti MkIV 1.8T cambelt question

My sister's been quoted a high price for changing the cambelt on her 40k mile Golf Gti MkIV 1.8T. We'd like to know what the consequences are if the cambelt goes - i.e. is there sufficient clearance between piston and fully extended dangling valve?! Does anyone know?

think 40k is too early for belt change unless its due on age ?

but take it from me if in any doubt replace the belt! rubber is always cheaper than metal where thats concerned..

I pay £60 labour to get Golf belts done takes my man under 2 hours to do.. .. belt/idlers/tensioners from main dealer should be around £80 think I pay £55 trade through the trade club, but there could be different kits depending on engine code , may be worth replacing the water pump and other belts while you are on...

Best advice for a 1.8T Belt is 60K or 4 years, whichever is the sooner.

My Skoda dealer quotes around £300 for a belt swap and getting the water pump changed at the same time is a very wise precaution. Independants will be a LOT cheaper.
