Audi R8. What a visual and engineering feast.

Will it force Porsche to up their game ?

Be interesting to see how it drives. The autocar test suggested it wasn't all that in the driving dept.

I agree about the quality of design though. Audi are really on the ascent on that front.

No

Porsche virtually control the the VW group. Audi will not build anything that will directly compete with their model line up.

Suspect the R8 will not be dynamically good enough to give pork a run for its money

The interior of the R8 looks lush - the 911 so desperately needs an interior facelift.

not really - people are making too big a deal about the R8 - the Gallardo has been around for ages, and its considerably better looking and faster than the R8.

Lambo is a a bit more expensive - if the R8 has been a v10 for carrera s money, then it would have caused a stir.

Think the R8 fits nicely into the current choice of cars - you can get an Aston with similar power for similar money - and thats an Aston!

The car which could have forced Porsche to up their game would have been a V10 mid engined NSX for 65k - but thats not gonna happen now. Or a baby ferrari, but then the F430 is not fast enough to give room for a bab model which can rival the 911.

A bit? I would call nearly £50K more than a bit.

They dont compete in the same sector. R8 is going up against the 997 C2/4 S as an everyday useable sportscar.

No, nor did I - although it wasn't a full blown test. Looking forward to finding out for myself soon.

All i meant is that a car will only cause a real stir if it leapfrogs into the sector above apart from price. The R8 (from what we all read) is a v impressive machine, but there are already some very impressive cars already in the 70-100k bracket. So i dont think it will cause a big stir.

Think that people are glazing over the point that Porsche owns a large stake in Audi. I think the real aim here is to own the 70-100k market more, and R8 is targeting the XKR and AMV8 buyers more.

What better result for Porsche/VW group to have the 2 class leaders in the group, and the AM as an also ran. Personally i think AMV8 is the style choice, but many of the buys of new cars in this bracket dont really do their research.

Saw one at a motorshow in Germany - have to say the styling looks much better in real life and the interior is very sleek.

However, the cars fall into a slightly awkward space - not quite a Gallardo and without the heritage/badge/prestige of a 911 or AMV8. Can imagine that after the initial hype the depreciation hit on an R8 could be quite severe.

Just my thought.

Cheers - Erik.
