Depends how rusty the bolts are. Some of them are quite long, very thin and pass right through the entire engine, all the way to the diff...

Lots of water poump variations so make sure you get the one that is exactly the same as the original.

Got mine from RPI last year - very helpful. Problems I encountered were having to slacken the PAS pump bracket and and swing it clear, as 2 of the pump bolts pass through this bracket, and I did break one of the bolts - fortunately one of the short ones at the top which was fairly easy to remove. First attempt at fitting the v. thin paper gasket wasn't seated properly, only showing a leak under pressure The replacement gasket from RPI was much thicker and stayed in place. The book says use a special thread sealant /lubricant on the bolts - couldn't find any so I put a coating of blue Hylomar on the bolts, and no leaks so far.

Thanks for that. Wilco can get the one for SD1 (Quinton Hazell part). Will that be ok? How long would it take to do? I'm wondering whether a friend will be able to do it or whether I need to get it to the garage 20 miles away!

I recon is should take around 1.5 to 2 hours, but when you start to slacken the water pump bolts they will feel very springy if you know what i mean, just keep even pressure on then and gently build up the pressure untill they brake there hold, not all will be growen in, i think 2 or 3 will be afected by the water, when they are out give them a clean up with a wire brush and emary cloth then coat with copper slip, this will stop further corosion and help you the next time the cover will need to come off.

Are you going to reuse the coolent or totaly replace it.

Good luck and take it slowly to start with, just get a feel for the bolts, its an old car as my engineer keeps telling me

AS SH says, there are variations.

Can you take the old one off before ordering a new one?

Have a look here:www.v8engines.com/engine-9e.htm

Thanks for this, but I am (only) a girl !! I will print your comments and show to my friend who might reluctantly agree to try to change it. But no I can't take it off. I will have to order the QH one and hope for the best ! Do you need pit or ramp to change it?

no pit or ramp, but definitely remove the bonnet - it's very easy. I would seriously at least talk to RPI - they are V8 specialists, and will know what you need if you can help with a bit of description. I doubt your motor factor will have a clue - unlikely to list TVR in their books, so you'll probably end up with the wrong one, they'll charge you for mis-ordering, and you'll have to start again.

Hope this helps.
