Hi all,

I built a system based on a intel Core 2 duo & Asus P5W DH Deluxe motherboard a couple of days ago.

Just found out the hard disk is running in IDE mode. When it should be SATA II(AHCI).
Tried enabling AHCI in the bios ( enables Native Command Queuing (NCQ)support and Hot Plugging for SATA drives ) then windows would not boot.

Just found the fix and it works !

Follow these instructions exactly and take your time. Bookmark this posting in your webbrowser so you can find it after rebooting,

1.) www.neowin.net/forum/lofiversion/index.php/t457699.html

then download the intel matrix manager software:

2.) http://downloadfinder.intel.com/scrip

Hope this was useful.

In the bios, I changed from IDE to AHCI then win xp would not boot (blue screen of death ).
changed it back to IDE and windows booted fine.

This worked for my setup but proceed at your own risk!

I can imagine there are plenty of users out there running their SATA drives in IDE mode !

How can one find in what mode the disks are running?

Edit: I suppose through the hardware manager in the control panel. Looks like mine's connected as IDE as well, damn.

See ! So many people are running in IDE mode. Just follow the instructions and you can be up and running in minutes.

The reason for the BSOD will be the system registry, basically it's pointing to one channel and getting another. I've come across this issue when doing a sysprep and trying to pout a SATA HDD image onto an IDE HDD and straight away before even getting to windows setup screen i got BSOD.

Apparently Windows Vista is going to have a setup in the way that you can just run on any machine and it detects all the hardware configs on boot up so in theory you can hot swap to another machine and will work.. if this is true then it will be nice to get it on a USB Keyring, then i no longer need boot disks for work

Problemos!

Just followed the guide, but in step 12, Windows does NOT ask anything (so I cannot select no either)...
The computer works fine now, but 1) in the device manager, one of the two JMicron raid controller icons has an exclamation mark next to it and 2) intel matrix storage manager says my system does not meet the requirements...
I suppose I need to install the drivers of step 3 (the file there seems newer btw, it's a 6 instead of a 5 in the filename) manually?

Any input is appreciated!

Edit 1: I'm a fool: I'd set the JMicron RAID controller in AHCI mode, not the intel southbridge nerd
Everything works exactly as the guide says, need to reboot now :fingerscrossed:

Edit 2: Everything's working fine, but the Intel proggie says my HD can't do NCQ. Odd as both are WD 7200.10 16mb SATA2 beasties...

Hi there. Glad its working.

I just did a google:

wd2500ks ncq

looks like your hard drive does not support NCQ.

Can you see a speed improvement ?

When my HDD was in IDE mode, I heard a few noises from it.

Now in AHCI mode it is silent ands seems faster. But it could be my imagination !

I think there's a small improvement in speed, but not in noise.

Thanks for informing us!

I am going to purchase some chip set cooling fans tomorrow. Will report my findings here.

My only problem is my memory(RAM) - should have opted for slightly higher spec memory which allows more room for overclocking.

Will be interesting to hear the results.
I've considered getting a chipset cooler as well, but haven't (yet). I did get the Zalman 9500 led for the cpu though, and am very pleased with it: it's a hell of a lot more silent than the stock fan and temps are a lot lower now too.

There are many chipset coolers to choose from. I'm going to go for a couple of Akasa coolers.

These should retail for £4 each. Due to their popularity many shops are overcharging or stocking an alternative.

I'm also going to go for some Artic silver 5. This thermal paste has been reported as being much better than the included paste.

A friend of mine has a PC business in London, will call him tommorow.
