HI ALL
RATHER NEW TO THIS PORSCHE THING,GOT A 3.2 CARRERA RECENTLY AND I'VE GOT A QUESTION.
WHAT IS THE RUBBER PIPE PROTRUDING FROM BEHIND THE OIL FILLER NECK,AND WINDS ITS WAY SEEMINGLY TO THE BACK OF THE ENGINE,IS IT ABREATHER PIPE OR A OIL PIPE WITH HIGH PRESSURE AS I HAVE GOT A COUPLE OF MINOR CRACKS
WHERE IT BENDS AND WONDERED IF THAT IS A PROBLEM OR NOT.PLUS ARE ALL PRE G50 BOXES HALF THE TIME STUBBORN?

Paul
The pipe is the upper breather pipe which returns oil and combustion fumes back into the intake elbow from the oil tank. There is also a lower breather pipe from the crankcase to the bottom of the filler neck that takes oil from the case and puts it into the tank for separation. These pipes always perish and crack, have them both replaced on the next service, they are around £25 each, we and others sell them if you want to fit them yourself.

The 915 is often a little awkward, they never go into 1st gear whilst rolling and often baulk going in when stationary. 2nd & 3rd syncros wear quickly, so you can often beat them with quick changes. The box is easily rebuilt with new bits, but budget for £6-700 for a box out and rebuild with new syncro rings throughout, although if the box is crunching changes you may need dog teeth & operating sleeves as well which will add a lot more to the price.

For 700 quid, would it make more sense to whack in a s/h G50?... seen them for 900 cheapest so far.

Would you need a new bell housing and clutch, making the project too expensive, or could you just use an adapter plate?

I believe the G50 is very involved - the clutch is hydraulic rather than cable operated and this links the brake master cylinder etc etc.

Try changing the gearbox oil for Swepco - it made an incredible difference on mine.

Come on Domster, surely you did maths at school?

G50 box £900
G50 flywheel and clutch, used (!) £200
G50 pedal box, gear linkage and hydraulics £500
G50 rear torsion beam section (from breaker) £300
G50 torsion bars, springplates £200
G50 driveshafts £200

Labour: Remove engine & box. Remove rear suspension. Cut out rear beam section and graft in G50 beam. Remove and refit pedal box, install hydraulics. Fit flywheel, clutch and gearbox to engine. Fit torsion bars, springplates & suspension arms. Change driveshafts. Replace gear lever & shift rod. Install engine, hook up all anciliaries. Bleed brakes & clutch.
Set rear ride height, 4 wheel align.
Approximately 45-50 hours labour, say £2000.

Let's just say that you had a momentary abberation Dom, it's far cheaper to buy a later Carrera if you don't like the 915.

LOL, well, it seemed cheap to start off with! I had assumed you could carry a few more parts over, and the labour would be less intensive.

I hate the 915 box anyway. I know some love it, but I thought it was like stirring porridge.

With nice G50 3.2s being affordable these days, especially in LHD, this would be my choice.

Cheers
Dom
