Anyone know of a decent soft top repairer in the North London / Herts area? Been meaning to replace the screen on my Chim at some point since I bought it as it's clearly past its best and the stitching's half gone, but on Sunday I stupidly tried to fold the roof down whilst cold and split the plastic screen. So that's kind of rushed me along a bit! Anyone know of a decent repairer in the area? Cheeers

Hi Justin,

I can't recommend a repairer in your area I'm afraid, but I would suggest that you check to see whether the windscreen policy on your insurance covers replacement of your back window (if you haven't already done so).

My policy did (I was with Norwich Union at the time) so all I had to cover was the £60 excess and it had no effect on my NCD. The only thing to be aware of is the potential need to have a fairly involved conversation with them if they have a problem grasping the concept of a plastic rear window and continually try to tell you to call Autoglass!

Good luck with your search!

Cheers,

Richard

Stupid question but I've never claimed under windscreen cover before - does it affect your NCB (and count as a claim if you have protected NCB)?

A 'windscreen' claim shouldn't have any impact on your NCB/NCD, but your insurance company can obviously confirm. The majority of policies will allow for a free repair on a windscreen (for chips etc.) if possible, otherwise they'll charge the agreed windscreen excess (different to the main policy excess) for a replacement.

When I made this claim for my rear window it had no impact on my NCB and the total cost of the job was £295 IIRC (for new window plus fitting).

My insurance finally provided an answer for me, albeit not that positive. They advised the "glass cover" is not restricted to the windscreen, but because the rear window isn't made of glass, it's nt covered. Bugger!

Looks like I'll be paying for it myself, joy...

Sorry to hear that Justin. I know of one of person who managed it (which is where I got the idea from) but I guess he and I got lucky!

Still, it was worth a try I guess...

Hi Justin. I got a call from TuscanMadness last night who's having a bit of a problem posting on here ATM but asked if I could pass on a message to you. Apparently your 'windscreen' insurance should cover your rear window even though it's plastic; the insurance company's denial is simply a ruse to save them some dosh.

TM's suggestion was that you should contact Autoglass, or whoever is used by your insurance company, and ask them to recommend a local specialist to carry out the repair for you. This way they should hopefully be able to take care of the payment etc.

I hope I've passed on the message correctly - the general gist is "don't give up on the insurance route"!
