help Needed with resetting computer
Discussion
Hi everyone , I'am hapsolutely useless with computers but I have a dell system and I can remember having problems with it when I first got it and dell support told me to keep pressing one of the F Keys to reset it whilst it is booting up, can anyone help me as the computer is having problems, thanks any help would be appreciated.
Sorry it is a long story but the computer was taken apart by a certain place and when it was returned it was in pieces and now it is saying keyboard failure on bootup and when I am trying to go on the internet it will not allow me to sign in on any secure site, I tried to download IE 7 but now it will not even connect to the internet and I keep getting pop up messages telling me that there is certian files missing etc, I am sorry for becoming a pain but I am waiting to get the computer replaced but they do not rush and I was hoping to restore it to the factory settings to see if this would solve the problem.
Hold on. Keyboard errors on boot up? Is it:
A. Big black screen with white text that says "Keyboard Error. Press F1 to continue."
B. Windows bitching about no keyboard (i.e. System loads windows and THEN moans).
A. Means either the keyboard or motherboard is stuffed (or not plugged in fully).
B. Means Windows is stuffed.
To fix A. Grab a spare keyboard and plug it in. If this corrects the problem. Loverley. If not... erm... so about that new computer you wanted?
To fix B. Sod it, it sounds like Windows is bolloxed. Grab the reinstall CD's, insert the Windows ones, boot off of that and try a repair install. This will get you limping along until such time as you can backup important stuff and commit acts of genocide with a full install.

It sounds like 1 or more of the keys on the keyboard is/are stuck down for some reason. Maybe some kind soul at the repair place spilled something on it... If you can't sort that, you can probably get a replacement keyboard on Ebay if you dig around.
When you have several problems with a machine it is generally best to sort the first problem first, as they can easily have a knock-on effect. e.g. if the Ctrl button is stuck down it would be difficult to get Windows to work properly.

As has been said, determine the root cause of the problem before attempting the following, i.e. if the keyboard is broken try the following:
Sounds like some of the cells under the keyboard are stuck, don't worry though.
Fill the bath with hot-ish water (i.e. not too hot) and add some washing up liquid.
Stick the keyboard in the bath (obviously not connected to the computer) and leave for a couple of hours (cleans your keyboard if nothing else.)
When done leave in the airing cupboard overnight to dry out (basically hot dry place), great for unsticking keys and cleaning the keyboard.
I used to buy second hand keyboards to sell with computers as they were better than the cheap crap. The old Cherry ones that offices would just throw out when they changed their computers. They were indestructable.
NOTE: I haven't done this with more modern keyboards, therefore you try this at your own risk!
However from the sounds of it its either this or a new keyboard.
