Well, it's classed as an RTA, luckily I wasn't on the bike at the time.

Parked my bike outside my local Hein Gericke this afternoon whilst I was in picking some bits up. Whilst I was at the sales counter this woman n fella come in and ask me if it was my bike outside: turns out some van driver had backed into my van knocking it over, got out & picked it up and then drove off. The nice lady & her man had been driving by, seen it happening, took his reg then came into the shop to look for me. Nice people!

Now, the bike isn't that badly damaged, but both engine covers are scraped and the offside peg is a bit bent. Had the guy left a note or come in to find me I'd have probably asked him to bung me some cash for the peg and left it that, but as he's doen qa runner I'm a bit miffed. I want my bike sorted, even though it is only cosmetic damage, but how do I go about it? I've informed the police, but should I inform the insurance company now about the damage or should I wait and see what happens when they get in touch with the vehicle owner?

I'd be inclined to inform your insurers, it's their responsibility to then contact the insurers of the other party, regardless of whether they stopped.. It's the job of the police to go find the chap that left the scene of an "accident"..

I'd second that.

to add, the police should have given you a crime reference number, make sure you give that to the insurers..

What a wnaker. Tell everyone. Post it in the local paper! And don't forget to buy that nice couple a drink....great stuff.

Hope the guy gets a roasting from the BIB. Make sure you get the bike back to new at HIS cost.

The Police should press the guy for an explanation of why he fooked off. However my experience on this score is mixed.

Agree with the above.Contact your insurance company, the police should have given you a ref number to pass on to the insurance company, also you should have taken and hopefully have the name and address of the people who wittnessed the incident to give to the insurance company. The driver of the van has comitted an offence by leaving the scene of an accident and failing to notify you or the police as far as i am aware.

Again agree with the above. as your did not hit him your insurance company will pass this on to the legal people who will sort it out. I am in the process of doing this with the guy who did a u-turn in front of me a few weeks ago. i did not hit him and only minor danage to the bike

Thx for the replies guys, very helpful in making me clarify in my own mind what I should do.

I'm getting a bit miffed to be honest: when I told the police about it, firstly I was left to speak to a cadet who looked barely beyond school age, and then when I asked for a crash reference number lastnight I got told that they couldn't give me that because they were referring it to a station nearer the scene of the accident to deal with. Fair enough thinks I, so I go down tonight to ask about it and get told I should leave it a day or two as Partick probably don't have the paperwork yet! mad

Nevermind, tomorrow I get the insurance company involved, which will probably be a futile exercise without the CRN, but by that time I'll be so hacked off with the whole affair I'll probably go hunt out a legal firm near me who specialise in dealing with non-fault claims and see if I can stretch the total bill to four figures....

Or I'll give up as it's borderline as to whether or not it's worth my time.

Don't Why on should you have damage of any size on your bike that some prick has done to your bike and let him get away with it.

I did feel the same way but after talking to others about it they said the same. its a pian in the ass but not your fault.

So white van tt and get it sorted and make his life hell for leaving the seen of a accident that he did with out ot any help from others

get your bike sorted, its only going one way in your favour. you did nothing wrong.

To add you might need a race can, new double bubble screen, power commander etc that may have broke when it got hit

SORRY had a few beers and know what you are going through
