Im in the market for an Alfa GTV 2.0 16v (98-00)and would like to know the difference between the basic model and the Lusso. I've read that the Lusso has leather interior, bigger wheels and air con, is this true and does it have any other extras? The reason i ask is that i've seen plenty of cars advertised as Lusso's that have cloth interiors and was wondering how to tell a if its a genuine one. Also, why do some have black trim at the bottom of the bumpers and black skirts and others don't?

Not sure exactly what came as standard vs Lusso, but the ones with black skirts are Phase I cars, produced up to late '98. Phase II cars have body-coloured trim, an updated interior, and a chrome insert to the shield on the bonnet. As far as I know there are no mechanical differences from PI to PII, although I've got a feeling the 2.0 engine went from 150 to 155bhp at some point, not that that would make much odds. Phase III cars (from '03 ? ) had the big massive nose.

Lusso Spec adds Leather, no Leather not Lusso. Air con was an option on the Phase 1 , not sure about the later ones. The best buying guide etc. can be found at www.sportsalfa.com/buying.htm
Everyone at some time in their car owning life should own an Alfa

Is that for PI cars? Might be right - I don't think I've seen a PI with an aerokit, but it's not the case for PII cars which were all body-coloured, aero-kit or not.

Take your point about the first one, I guess I was focussing more on the 'black skirts' and the fact that on the PI the entire front airdam was black, not just the little lip on the front spoiler.

Second picture looks like a PI to me (unless I just can't see the chrome on the shield), but it's got non-standard wheels anyway so no guarantee the rest of it is original.

So we agree then? PI has black airdam and skirts, PII has colour-coded airdam and skirts and (the bit I forgot) a PII with an aerokit also has a little black lip on the front spoiler.

Aerokit came body-coloured when ordered as a dealer option I think. You could always order them after-market as well, though (then they'd come unpainted and you'd have to sort them yourself).

Lots of PI cars around that have had the skirts etc colour-coded and the bonnet shield replaced with a PII one.

Best indication of a PI or PII car is the interior, as they're a lot of work to replace.

Cheers for info, the 1 im going to look at is a phase 1 then as it has the old style interior, black bumper trim etc..
Should i hold out for a phase 2 as this one is immaculate; R reg, FARSH, only 44k, Red momo Leather. I don't know whether to go for it or find a nice phase 2. Its on autotrader.co.uk for £3,995, gunmetal silver located in macclesfield if any one wants to check it out and give me there opinion.

IMHO phase 2's are worth the extra cash.
they look much more modern, and have aged better....

yes They still look the best of the bunch inside and out - the PIIIs were a facelift too far.

TBH 4k sounds a bit high for a '97 phase 1.

yes Sounds like somebody's gone mad with the mileage adjustment chart in Parkers'...

for £4k you can take your pick.mines is a late '98 3.0 lusso with full leather, body coloured bumpers, skirts and silver on the dash.the aero pack was standard on the limited edition cup models on '03 or '53 plates which i'm not a fan of.what one you go for make sure the timing belt has been changed and chack the suspension for knocking sounds as these two are expensive if they go wrong.good luck
