Anybody have any idea what kind of prices CC would give on part exchanges? Thinking about trading up to a new r400 but it obviously depends on what CC would give in PX. I am of course being pessimistic about selling my R300 privately in the current climate,and also avoiding the hassel of a private sale by just throwing the car at CC does appeal.

Basically what percentage should I subtract from their used stock prices to reflect PX values?

I have an R300 with all the right bits so considering Raceline as an option for a duratec conversion.

Can you not use most of the engine parts then go to Dave Andrews or any of the other K specialists who can help you get 210-220hp out of it. I think this would be a cheaper route than getting shafted by CC on a trade in?

How much is a 2.3 duratec off the shelf from Raceline? What's the all up cost of a conversion? ta.

I am just waiting to hear back from the guys for an all up "drive in/drive out" cost. I dont think CC wold pay much for a 12,000mile 2002 r300, so this looks like better value for money.

Yes, DVA could fettle the K, but I want r500 power levels so Duratec is the way to go without going into handgrenade territory.

Also would anybody be interested in a full R300 powertrain package? (engine, apollo tank, 6 speed box, Roller TBs, full exhaust system)? NO ECU though.. as that will be used on the Duratec (MBE)

I am looking for an engine, and a six speed box would be a lovley addition to my car, this might be a bit out of my price range though, but mail me (details in my profile) and we can discuss, see if we are in the same ballpark (assuming I could get an ECU)

Excited about the prospect of 160BHP (thats another 50 for me to play with) !!!!!!!

Carsten, if your R300 is largely standard (put the windscreen back on if you went for that aero) it should be easy to sell privately for good money. The modded cars (esp. with cage) are hard to shift though

Yep.. largely standard and was buildt with aeroscreen and no heater.

Very confusing all this..

Sell your current car. As others have said, it should move, and you'll kill resale value modding it yourself.

Putting a Duratec in a chassis that had a K will not be a cheap exercise either.

Well exactly, finally gotten it specced the way I love it: Stack, MB rims, lowered floorpan, carbon tarty bits etc.. I just want more power and going 200bhp in a K series aint an option (too much spent on poxy K's in Elises and Exiges..so I hate them in high HP..160 is the highest I want to go as this doesnt affect reliabilty)

SO basically I dont want to sell it as I all I want is an engine change to a more modern powerplant. SO even though the sensible side says to sell and start again, the voices in my head are telling me to go with a conversion. I keep my favorite car and get a high HP and reliable car.

You really should have a word with oily/Dave Andrews.

There's no reason why a 200bhp K need be unreliable.

You could take out your current engine, store it, drop in a 200bhp K. Run it until you want to sell it (if you want to sell it), drop your engine back in and sell the screamer.

Probably the cheapest way to achieve what you want...?

K in a 7 is different to one in an Elise etc. Different problems admittedly, but a chat to Dave should see you straight.

what Murph said, plus,

my std (non scholar, evo, blah blah blah block) k series has 212hp (R500 cams, and emerald ECU, DVA 'quick n dirty' head)) and has never let me down once. All the car does is trips to the ring and occasional race, so it gets a very hard time. IMHO much of the money spent on stronger internals is for the 'carbonists' out there, i.e my car has this and that, etc, etc. Sure, they will help an engine last longer, but careful use of a std motor, i.e. single tang rods, forged pistons, std valves, etc doesn't necesserily mean unreliability.

When you say unreliability, who has done the work on the car, and what have the nature of the failures been. I would get some careful facts on what 'the internet' has told you prior to parting with any lumps of cash. Even blatchat, often regarded as the oracle by several owners, often talks up it's own book and offers over specified solutons for the majority of applications. Sure, we'd all like the idea of a 300hp duratec lump, but if you a) don't do much track work, b) use decent tyres, c) can't drive the f'king thing - what's the point?

less than £3k should still secure you a 200bhp R400 ex race R400 engine too, complete with dry sump etc...and you'll still spend less than you spent on your Exige (mind you, that was a nice Exige....)

A Scholar 1900 block, forged pistons and single tang rods plus a DVA ported VVC or MS2 head with BP285 cams will see you with 220 to 230 bhp at less than 8000rpm. Wilder cams could get you 240+ (@higher RPM) but this might stress the engine a bit too much for the reliability you want. (I assume you have roller barrels and that you would reuse the MBE). This should set you back around £5000 fully built. You then need to factor in removal and refitting if you won't do this yourself and a decent rolling road session to map the engine.
The Scholar conversion addresses the head gasket reliability issues by setting the perfect liner height. At 220ish BHP and less than 8000rpm you won't be pushing the engine too hard.
A turnkey Duratec conversion will cost at least double that.
Otherwise selling the car and ordering a new R400 would seem the sensible way to go.

Few grand to make it road legal and away you go? Although saying that, by the time you've done that you may as well buy a normal road spec car I guess.

On the reliability front, I did 20k miles in my R400 (road and track) with no problems whatsoever and previous to that I did 20k in my R300 (same usage) again with no problems.

Damn I miss not having a 7. cry

oooh, but you know these K-series engines are fragile and unreliable don't you!! hehe

Oh I didn't mention that I had a modified S1 Elise that had completed over 50k miles did!?!?

I have never driven a Caterham but am hankering after one now.
I had a westfield as a part built kit but soon found i couldnt fit in it. A few years ago at the Goodwood FOS i sat in a caterham and it just felt so right. I hope to get one later in the year but if i see a super deal i may snap it up sooner.
