Migrating from Websphere 4 to 6, but all the docs I can find are just on a 5 to 6 migration.... Does anyone know of any issues with regards to the migration or should the system run in parallel to 4???

Silly question: is there a 4-5 migration document? Does it offer any clues? And why are you so far behind current releases, you naughty boy? nono

Work for big company with policy of 'if it ain't broken, dont fix or upgrade' hence now in this position and working out whether to go safe and coexist or straight blatt over the top....

V5 was a completely different architecture to V4, so I'm fairly sure there was not an ability to directly upgrade the installation.
All my note's are at home, but I can look them out for you tonight if you like? Unfotunately I got cross-trained to WebLogic before V6 came out.

I learned on v5, so know it quite well... only work turned round and went 'you know websphere' to which I replied yes... (should have known then) Now Im the expert (not touched it for a year) and they need me to migrate a package from 4 to 6.... I know 4 was a bunch of censored from what I have read 6 should be able to backwards compatable to version 4 scripting and when Im happy the little bugger works, I can upgrade the scripting to v6 completely.

Famous last words....

Sounds familiar, I ended up doing two years consultancy after a similar converations (oh, and being sent on a course!)

If it's the scripting that's causing you problems, I don't think 6 (or 5) will run v4 wscp scripts.
IBM have a page about migrating wscp to wsadmin scripts. Have a look at http://publib.boulder.ibm.com/infocen and click on the "Migrating from wscp V4.0 to wsadmin V5.0" link in releated concepts. There are some examples at the bottom as well.

Your J2EE 1.2 apps should migrate over from v4 to 6 (J2EE 1.4) with minimal fuss. The admin model from WAS from v5 onwards is radically different to v4 and as others have mentioned you will have to re-write any deploy/config scripts you have. I'd strongly suggest writing new scripts using Jython rather than JACL going forwards.

There is a detailed guide to WAS migration available here

With a specific section on version 4 to 6 migration here

Also for general migration advice, search Developerworks for any articles by Wayne Beaton. He was Mr. WAS migration until he joined the Eclipse foundation a while ago.

Finally, there are two Redbooks which will help:

Migrating to WebSphere V5.0 An End-to-End Migration Guide
WebSphere Application Server V6 Migration Guide
