So the monitor only has VGA and DVI?

If thats the case you'll need to convert the PS2 output into RGBHV and pass it over the VGA input.

The PC doesnt need to get involved unless you are planning on running the PS2 into a video capture card, which seems ill advised.

Thats format conversion.

The video signal that leaves the PS2 is Composite by default.

This needs converting into RGBHV for the monitor to understand.

You dont need a PC to do this, a video format converter box will do it, there are loads available.

I got this from eBay, thanks to a PHer's advice....I don't use it to connect to a PS2 but connect my Freeview box to my monitor....it has lots of inputs and outputs.

From the page:
Other solutions from mysimplemedia.com

Connect your PC to your LCD, Plasma and CRT using HDTV quality (component) or SCART
Connect your DVD, Freeview, Set top box to ---> your monitor or projector
Connect your DVD (progressive scan) or PS2, XBOX, etc to your monitor or projector using HDTV quality (component)

Have a look at what they sell.

That looks good Luca,

So I just connect that to my monitor, using the AVI connection on the monitor, and then plug my Playstation Red, yellow and white cables into the other side.

Would I have to disconnect The DVI cable from the monitor to the pc, or just leave it and have 2 connections into the monitor.

And what about sound?

I have one of these that too - its works a treat

It works over the VGA connection not the DVI one

Audio is carried on the red and white, there will I expect be a take off on the box to plug in an amp and speakers.

Correct...I plug into the VGA slot on my monitor, and when I want to use the TV, just change the source on the monitor from DVI to VGA...both are permanently plugged into the monitor.

As for sound, I take the red and white out of the converter box, and using a little jack converter, use that to plug into some PC amp and speakers (these are not connected to a PC)

Easy, but several wires.

A VGA convertor based on the component output of the PS2 should give a slight improvement in picture quality over a composite type vga box.

My Dell LCD monitor has S-Video input as well as DVI and 15-pin analogue, which would make this pretty trival.

Are you are sure your monitor really is only DVI and VGA? Because it you have S-Video as well then you're laughing.
