Relay for fans?

I have now cut the plugs off the radiator fan wires and twisted them together using electrical tape. The fans now sometimes come on when it suits them. I have found that they dont like coming on when the engine bay is warm (not the most useful). If the car is at 100c and stationary they will not come on, move a bit and get some air into the bay and suddenly they will!

I have decided to wire in a switch to the fans as I can no -longer be naffed with the terror every time I see traffic ahead, but wondered where the fan relay is and how easy it is to change.

The fan relays are the fuse box in the boot, it say in the hand book which ones. There are 2 relay 1 and seven, I dont know which is which, maybe someeone else does? It might be worth soldering the twisted wires together just to be sure of a good connection there.

The fans are controlled by the ecu, if you have got the software then u can see what temp the ecu is reporting, the dash temp gague tends to be not too acccurate as its capilary tube runs close to one of the manifolds heating it up, so it is possible that you are not running hot but jut appear to be. If you do a search it is quite a common problem, you may even come across a wiring diagram i did a while back to swich the fans on manually!

I've re-wired my fans with a direct feed from the battery and new relays located in the front of the car. The TVR relays and wiring in the boot now just trigger my ones, so they have a reduced load on them. I also wired in an overide switch so I can keep them on all the time in traffic.

Cheers guys, I am going to follow the Simonsparrow route and wire a switch into it so that I can have the fans on all the time in traffic. It will ease my mind. Fairly sure that my temp guage is right as the fans do tend to come on at 95, but they are a bit unreliable.
