How do I set iTunes to let me have multiple versions of the same tracks. i.e. I want to have both MP3 and also a lossless version for my sonos system?

Don't tell iTunes...
Save the lossless files elsewhere (& tell the Sonos where to find them) and use iTunes for the MP3's
Or am I missing something obvious?
IIRC you can set iTunes to allow for dupliate tracks, but then you will end up with a huge iTunes folder

I want to use iTunes lossless format so I guess each time I want to rip a lossless track I have to reconfigure iTunes and change the library path???

IIRC your iTunes files don't all have to be in the same place. You can also maintain more than one library - but not concurrently. Head over to the Apple Discussions Forums for the experts.

There's only ever going to be one Library in iTunes, but that doesn't stop you creating 2 playlists - one MP3 and the other ALE.
Selecting the songs in ALE playlist when using Sonus will play only the ALE ones.

ok, turns out if you hold down the shift key when you start itunes you can flip between libraries
