Sticking carbon bits to bodywork ?
Discussion
After some advice from anyone who's done it. Just bought a nice carbon key guard piece for my 748. It came with no fixings or instructions though. All it needs is to be stuck to the tank but I'm not sure the best thing to use for this. I could use double sided pads easily enough, but think it may make the guard sit proud of the tank. I'm thinking maybe a good dollop of silicon would do the trick. Anyone done this themselves - would the silicon damage the paint? Any other ideas how to do it ?
I stuck a Carbon tankguard on my 916 using impact adhesive (evostick?) as the double-sided pads supplied with it would do a poor job of holding it whilst at the same time look shite.
Stuck it some years back and it still looks spot-on and has not given me any problems whatsoever even though it has had petrol spilt on it etc, admittedly I've not tried to remove it but I'm confident it could be done without damaging the paintwork.

Make sure the top yoke is cleaned with alcohol (Not Vodka) to degrease before you stick it on.
Any particular reason not to use vodka?
Different scenario, but I ended up cleaning the processor and heatsink of my pc with bacardi as it was the only thing I could find in the house to remove the silicone grease! still seems to be working fine (although admittedly I wasn't trying to glue to the surface!)
Evotick eh? Hadn't thought of that. I was thinking of silicon because the piece won't sit flush to the tank in the V, so pads would either not be thick enough or be too thick. I think some people thought I've got a top-yoke cove, but it's not that. This is a piece that sits in the V of the tank where the ignition switch is on the 748/9** bikes.
Thanks for the replies.
And hobo - yes, carbon is to save weight if you replace something with it, but in this case it's to protect my tank in a very light weight way, nothing at all to do with looks
