On the whole there is nothing you can do to stop this happening. I would, if you are the actual server admin, check your mail server over and make sure it's not an open relay but once that's been ticked off the list your SOL. Also if possible try to set a mail rule so that if the inbound message is for root, postmaster, or an invalid address it is deleted, how you would do this depends on your server and the level of access you have to it.

It's simply people sending messages with fake Reply-To & From address. Exceptionally easy to do I'm afraid and short of killing everyone else on the face of the planet nowt you can do about it (although killing everyone else would also eliminate the need for e-mail).

Who's your email with? My pop3 mail servers are with easily.co.uk and they have a little option to not deliver bounced email. Which means if I am getting these bouncebacks from non-existent email address to my catch-all account I can set this to "on" and never see them, then turn it off again if I need to. It's turned off right now and the only ones I see are the "out of office" replies, not the automatic server messages (maybe 1 or 2 a day still instead of 50). This isn't on a business email so I don't need it turned off.

Maybe your provider has a similar option?
