I am wishing to upgrade my processor and not to clued up as to what to buy.
Can i have some help please.
I have a AMD 3800 San Deigo 939 and use 1GB of muskin memory using a DFI lan party RDX200 Board and a ATI 1950 GFX
I use the PC for gaming, burning DVDs,web and mail mostly.
Would a dual core be ok or should i got for a FX
Any help would be appreciated as i don't wish to waste my money buying the wrong thing.
Thanks for any help.

If it's working and doing what you want it to do, then any pupgrade is by definition a waste of money!
Fun, though.
Any reason for upgrading? How's the performance in your favourite games/ applications?
I'd have said that more memory might be a better move, another Gb would be quite cheap, and have a good effect on a lot of games - FEAR took about 1.8Gb last time I played it, for example. Ran like a dog and crashed on my pc until I went from 1 to 2 Gb.
Your results will vary according to cpu and task:-
http://www23.tomshardware.com/cpu.htm is only 12% faster.
I'd buy another Gb first.
Fun, though.

Thanks for your quick respoce,
I did think about memory and where i bought the muskin memory from they no longer sell it and i was told you should'nt mix memory.
Any advice on that one.
Thanks
Buy it elsewhere?
I assume its a single 1Gb stick? If so, the reason not to mix memory is because you can't then run in DDR mode (i.e. two identical sticks in the same coloured slots). There is a small perfromance hit from not doing this, so I'd buy elsewhere if possible.
It should be possible to buy memory from a different manufacturer with the same timings, and match it this way, but it may still look at the info. on the dimm itself and realise they aren't matched. I'd find another supplier.
If you've got two matched 512Mb sticks already, you should be able to buy another matched pair and put them in the other pair of slots, but they will only run at the slowest speed of whatever memory you've got installed.

V8 animal,i have a very similar spec machine,i would go with jimmy on this one i currently use 2GB of performance memory, and the boost is def worthwhile for demanding applications,if i was going to go dual core then i would just go to Intel core duo rather than investing any more money in skt939 and its slower DDR ram.
As above, 939 is a dead end. Only worth putting more money in if you really want the slight extra performance, otherwise best off waiting until you really need to upgrade, and spending the money you've saved in the meantime on replacing everything you can.
I'm going from a 4000+ to an FX-60, because i'm either going to upgrade when Crysis comes out, or not at all for another couple of years. If I do upgrade for crysis, it'll likely be a big one, and I'll have two pretty good gaming rigs at that point, so I'm not really losing out. Or so I tell myself. If I don't then the pc should last a couple of years nicely.
I'd still upgrade the memory, though, you should see a good difference.

Hi again,
I have a matched pair and they are set DDR i do have a pair left on the board so i will take them out and write the info down.
OCZ a good choice?
BTW the game i play at the moment GTR2 that's the reason i upgraded my GFX card and the ball keeps rolling so they say trying to get the most out of the game.
Thanks

Oh just out of interest and i was suprised too,i have igb of ocz platinum 512x2 & 1gb of crucial balistix 512x2 on the same board, both low latency with the same timings running overclocked, with tight timings at 1T and yes it runs perfectly stable,i cant say that this will work on your DFI but it works on my MSI neo2 plat with opteron cpu,but may be of some use.
wasnt a massive difference when i went from 1 gig to 2 gig in memory. just slightly smoother with no intermittent jerks in certain games (eg battlefield 2).
would have thought that for games its the graphics card thats the most important thing.
recently bought a 8800 gts. gtr2 seems silky smooth on my computer now, even with my 3000 AMD cpu.
Ive alos thought about upgrading the cpu but not sure it worth it. All of my games run preety well.

Yes i would agree i didnt notice a massive improvment, but worthwhile, the only reason i upgraded was because i had the ballistix as back/up for my machine(had a lot of failures with OCZ)and did not expect the two brands to work together but they did, very well.

Well, just stuck the FX-60 in, and it's running very nicely now. I was experiencing some hesitancy and lack of responsiveness previously (thanks Mcafee
), but running very nicely now. If you do upgrade the cpu, go dual core!
Still think memory is the best first move, though - try running task manager, then gaming a bit, and see what memory use you get. Could be interesting, if you are at all near what you've got installed.
