FUNNY NOISE FROM ENGINE?
Discussion
Hi all,
Drove car into work today and driving fine. Car then stood for ten minutes re started and is now making a tapety rattly noise from the engine, noise is louder in the drivers seat then when bonnet lifted and only makes the noise when ticking over or labouring not on lift off.
Any ideas?

Definitely sounds like either a blowing exhaust gasket or a leak in the manifold. The first would require a replacement gasket, and the other would hopefully be fixable with a bit of welding (cheaper than a new manifold).
I don't think there's an exact science for determining where the leak might be, but if you've got a length of tubing handy try sticking one end in your ear and then moving the other around the top of the manifolds and the various joins in the pipes to see if you can pinpoint the source.

Mine is the same (V8S) - told it is the outlet manifold gasket. They are about £25 but the labour is the killer - quoted 12 hours by RT racing - very often the bolts snap or wont come out - thats when the fun starts. I am told it doesn't cause damage but will inevitably get worse. Good luck

mines going in in the next day or so for new stainless manifolds, been quoted 'a couple of hours' to fit. Hope that's not mechanics' speak

Pick my Chim up tomorrow after having the blowing Exhaust manifold gasket replaced.
Sadly, it wasnt a straighforward job as 3 of the studs broke and as a result the heads had to come off.It got worse because one of the studs on the block (inlet manifold) refused to come out(old age i guess) but the guys from Topcats Racing have done a superb job to get my car back on the road for only a moderate sum of money.
Their patience and know-how have definately saved me loads more expense because both the heads and the block could have been resigned to the scrap heap if the removal of the studs had not gone according to plan.
Hopefully the sun will be shining tomorrow as i once again hear that V8 roar instead of that dreaded tapping noise that ive been hearing for the past 2 weeks.

The fut fut noise at tick over or on load is normally the exh. manifold gaskets. On some cars these go due to age and on others due to poorly machined/corroded exhaust manifold mating faces. If studs/nuts come out/off okay it's a painless job. Tappetty noise when cold which goes when car warms up is often the hydraulic followers. If it does it at every start, even when hot restart
if when cold only and after being left it's not normally a problem.
The Marcos 32 valve engine is a Ford Cobra Mustang unit of nominal 320 bhp in standard trim. If s/c'd by any other than Ford - care! IMHO!

ended up changing both manifolds on my 97 chim (40k)after blowing!!! lots of money changing gaskets had both old manifolds pressure tested and both had leaks from around the 4 branch area ive been told they could possibly weld however they still sit in garage.my blow was only really noticable on load i.e 5th gear from 1500rpm up
Hi All,
Sorry for the late response but has taken a while to sort. as suspected noise was down to blown manifold gasket. apparently rear bolts were very loose. Proberley due to difficult access, Now sounds great and could'nt resist quick roof off blast despite slight rain. Got back from drive and now remember why i bought her. FANTASTIC.
