Right,

'Er indoors forum has been hacked, admin account deleted, basically the whole nine yards, the little tts.

It was a phpBB2 install.

Now, is it worth perservering with phpBB2 (but with over the top security measures in place) or do the assembled think I would be better off starting again with something like SimpleMachines?

Effectively either way its going to be relaunched as it wasnt used very much so we're going to try to incentivise its use when its up and running again.

Either way technically it doesnt really matter to me just wondering on peoples views of the alternatives to the market leader as such.

I think phpBB is the best BB out there by a long way. In terms of ease of deployment, end user experience ease of administration and functionality it's top.

Sadly, this has made it very popular, and as it's open source, it's regularly expoited by bots and script kiddiots. so any phpBB admin needs to stay on top of the security updates, which at time can be a chore.

A mate of mine has started using this http://getvanilla.com/ and though it takes a little getting used to for the users, is really quite nice.

Now you've baited the sandalist

Do you think there is a higher risk for open source apps to be exploited compared to closed source ones?

I think the higher risk is with whichever application enjoys the widest deployment.

phpBB is the main forum to be targetted by bots, kiddies and spammers. It is, very much a 'which bugs do you want?' when selecting the version to install and requires a modicum of work to harden against intrusion. Having said all of that, it is also the most common forum and this makes it very friendly for users.

EDIT: As people don't like derivatives on here. I'll help ya. But it'll cost.

HAPPY NOW?

I'm far to hammered to put this politely so let me just state:
Boo Hoo. Nasty Sarah's using a derivative of someone else's work (even through all my modifications to it are trunc'd). Boo... Hooo. Tell you what, next time, I'll just offer to fix it for £30p/h and keep shtum rather than actually helping people for free.

Thanks all.

Currently fiddling with SMF, its nice but the interface is somewhat muddled.

What I'd ideally like is the functionality of phpBB but with the ability to be themed into the current site, as it is all the options I've looked at are very much stand alone and dont look 'right' in the context of the rest of the site if you see what I mean.

I've found rich forum functionality in phpBB and SMF or crap functionality thats easily modified but never both.

I guess you've thought about asking Ted if he might be able to do a simple forum based on his code for PH? Either that the only other ones not mentioned yet are Vbulletin and the Invision Power Board, but they won't be free either.
