Wedge wheels on a Griff?
Discussion
It's a matter of taste(lessness?) I know, but does anyone know if 400SE wheels will fit a Griff, or if there's a more recent equivalent out there that might? I'm just nuts about dished rims, and the Estorils on my 500 just don't do it for me. I think the deep-dished affairs with polished rims on the SE are some of the nicest wheels I've ever seen, and would love to get something similar on the Griff.
It would be nice to use a TVR wheel, as a (pathetic I know) attempt to retain a smidgen of originality - after all, Estorils have been used on Chimps haven't they? I wouldn't dream of using most modern wheels, as the current styles just wouldn't be in keeping (generally far too "bling" - or is that a noun?), but if anyone's seen anything 5-spoke-ish that might do, please let me know.
Help, advice, or a talking-to to make me see sense gratefully received....

The SE wheels are by OZ, and they did a 'deep-dish' style for the Griffith, but with a spoke effect and the correct 4 bolt configuration. Polished rim too

but be prepared to pay a small fortune for them. Oh, and they are apparently a complete pain in the bum to clean, and suffer from corrosion problems around the bolts.
I know a couple of Griff owners who have a set of these and just use them for the summer.
Nice wheels on the Wedges though weren't they

Thanks to The Surveyor for that suggestion - not sure if I'd fancy keeping all that lattice stuff clean though. But I have found a fairly close replica from image wheels (if you imagine the yellow centre as silver) which can be made to order with the correct 4 stud centres - but I'd have to save up for £300 a corner....

If you were putting new on, and getting them made to suit, considder putting 16's on the front and 17's on the back. Not for any 'bling' points, it'll let you keep the original look, and avoid the problems of finding correct speed rated tyres for the front.
I quite like the yellow centre BTW

Thank you everyone for your responses. Another member has kindly emailed me outside the forum with details of a 4 to 5 stud conversion but, as tork&tiv has I think correctly pointed out original wedge wheels won't look right at 15" all round. I like Paul's suggestion of putting 16" on the front and 17" on the back, so this would mean using new wheels (albeit of a slightly different design), which I would hope to get in the correct 4 stud pattern, which I am informed (thanks Hans) is 4x108. So just the offsets to sort out....

Depends on what rim width you go for but std. is 25mm front and 35mm or perhaps 37.5mm rear. I have 40mm rear and 34mm front on 8" width rims. Do a search through the archives, there's tons of stuff on bigger wheels and offsets. Rich... Hallo Steve
About the PCD.
The 5 stud conversion that I had made can use both pcd's. on the same hubflange.
5 x 114,3 ( Spider) and
5 x 112 ( Wedge )
You can use the later OZ type wheel ( Futura) in 8 inch, offset 35. Has the same appearence as old 400 style but a bit more modern. Don't know how to post a pic.
Hans.
Yes. I've done it when I wanted to move the wedge around and only had some Cerb wheels handy. Long story.
It might be a couple of mm but it is enough to prevent the wheel nuts from sitting in the recess correctly so that the correct clamping force can be applied. Not something I would want to risk on a wheel IMHO.

Hallo Steve,
The actual hub is redrilled. So there are still the existing 5 studholes with 5 x 112 and redrilled with an other 5 with the Spider PCD 5 x 114.3 ( so 10 holes in total)
I got those from a German based raceteam which uses these redrilled hubs on their endurance racecars.

You can post pics on www.tinypic.com and the site will give you a string to paste into your message which will then be replaced by the image - use the string intended for forums - seems to work for me.
Cheers,
Peter

I can't figure out what wheels you've got and what ones you're after, but I think that matt350 had some 5-spoke split rims on his Griffith that looked very similar to the ones shown earlier in the thread and was thinking about changing them, so if that's what you're after it would be worth dropping him a line.
