3000M central muffler
Discussion
Replacing the exhaust system and want to return to the standard central muffler configuration. Can anyone give me the approximate dimensions, length, width and height of the factory muffler as I'll have to get it custom made. Any thoughts on whether I should stay with 1 3/4" or should I go to a larger pipe size while I'm at it ? Still using standard 1 3/4" exhaust headers.
J.P. exhaust just supplied me with a complete stainless system, including headers for my 3000S. I don't know if mild steel is also avalible but the system is of excellent Quality. I also am unsure of an exact replacement spec. component or if their system is different than original. My car had a US spec.system originally(cat.) so I can't compare the original to the J.P. components.
I don't know how much the headers alone would be but the complete system was 500 pounds. Removing the headers is not an issue unless the fasteners are frozen at the motor (mine were not). With the car lifted on stands they come out from the bottom with no issues. I don't care for header bolts, I replaces the bolts with hardened studs and stainless lock washers and nuts. You do need to use a bolt at the front under the alternator for clearance.
Rod - dropped you a separate email with photos.
Centre box is 49cm long x 17cm wide x 9cm deep with 1 3/4" inlets and outlets. The box appears to be made in two equal segments and shining a lamp down the inlets there appears to be a centre baffle plate and are not straight through.
I'm told having a balance pipe between the two headers is a good idea for V8s (Mr Vizards excellent book) and would assume the same for a V6.
I might swap over this box over as it's nearly new and swap it. If I do I'll cut the old one open and report back.
Cheers
Chris
