What will I get in 3 yrs for 25k?
Discussion
Not sure of prices but I'd be looking for a 997C2 or a 987 Boxster if I were in your place. Mind you if I had 25k burning a hole in my pocket now I'd look for a 3.2 986 I suspect, unless a sweet 993 turned up.
So I guess it depends, just window shop for the next three years until something takes your fancy, there doesn't appear to be any rush. Except summer will be here in 3 months..

my view is thus:
996 turbo. 2000 MY are currently as low as £40k. think they will bottom out at 30K but you will get dregs with high mileage as low as 25k
996 NA range will bottom out at around 15k for the toot. there will be no price preference for C2/C4 and coupe's will probably be worth a little more than convertibles.
Carrera 4S will still retain a slight premium and you will be able to get an average mileage high spec machine for your budget.
GT3 MK1's will drop in value little more than today's prices, especially the well fettled ones with documented history. MK 2's will probably come down and may even be a little more unloved than the Mk1
GT's are unlikely ever to drop below £45k.
all IMHO of course

Thanks for the suggestions, but I think the
Boxster is a no go as I tried one a couple
of years ago and couldn't sit in it properly (6ft 4"+)
The seat couldn't go back far enough. Don't suppose this
has changed on the newer model. I think it was a '98 or '99
that I tried. I did sit in a mates 964 the other day and had
plenty of room so I guess a 996 would be the same.

Oh, and I want to do it now but the Mrs
says wait and I'll end up with a better car.
Do it now in 3 years time the car wont be any better because the range will have changed and be improved on. Todays 997 tomorrows 996.
Blimey...Live for today because one thing's for sure...in three years' time all you'll be is three years older and you'll have missed 3 years of fun

I dont mean to be rude but the original question to me seems to be completely ridiculous! No one has a crystal ball and a million things could and will happen in 3 years.
three things that spring to mind:
1. House market crash(very unlikely but possible)
2. The Government price out all gas guzzling vehicles.
Surly both of these would see what you think is out of your reach in 3 years then possible.
3. Car company's decide to only make lower emission cars resulting in all the older models becoming collectors(also highly unlikely)
So you might get a mini cooper s in 3 years.
I think asking what you may get in a year is pushing it but 3 years...........
thats only my opinion though

no doubt she will want to put clear plastic covers on the seats when you get one.
You may equally argue that in 3 yrs time the f
kwits in Brussels will have passed a whole new load of emissions laws for new cars, screwing up the new sports car market, in which case prices of older models will rise and you will get even less for your money life is for living. cars are for driving. seeing the future is for Gandalf.

I see what you mean...........so if I sell the house
now (just in case),get a 911 Turbo and live in a caravan
is that the idea? I'll put it to the ball and chain!!

nope, not the idea at all. your arguments are getting mixed up -
you say you want to do it now, which implies you have the means now. If the reality of this is that you only have the means by selling up and going pikey, I would humbly submit that you don't actually have the means, in which case saving for 3 years is sound and your wife, who is financially astute, is just softening the blow for you
or
you say you want to do it now, you do have the means but your wife genuinely believes it when she says wait for 3 years to get a better car, in which case I would humbly submit that she is completely wrong and you should ignore her (even if this means cooking your own dinner for 4 weeks and getting re-acquainted with Mrs Palm and her five lovely daughters)
It was a tongue in cheek comment. I do have
the means to do it now ( chop in the 545 + a bit of cash)
and I think Mrs Honeymonster
is a bit fed up with me swapping cars all the time
and saying 'I'll keep this one for x yrs '. I do quite
a bit of mileage and the BM has 60000 on it now. I'd rather
put the mileage on a cheaper car and have the Porsche for fun.
