Thats a good point - I recently spent £12 at Halfords (filler, alu spray & lacquer spray) tarting up some tired old kerbed 17" M3 rims to use as winter rims on our 330d Touring for a trip to Austria. With fairly little effort they ended up looking really good but I'm under no illusion that the finish will last too long as it was a DIY job.
Having said that I agree with the sentiment that if they've put their hands up accept gracefully - don't be too unreasonable with them.

Halfords Laquer and paint is acrylic IIRC. Anyhow if frosty it turns white and can flake off - but the white will go again if if dries out again. It's not really exterior grade paint.
Wheels however will last longer than for instance wing mirrors, roof bits as they are less exposed.
