They are pushed in from the rear ~ need to remove the hub to tap out IIRC. Good time to replace bearings, just need a mega torque wrench.

You may be able to get them out without removing the hub ~ with a puller/press not sure. Be warned if you simply drive them out in situ you would probably kill the wheel bearings...

Cheers spend, was considering drilling it out in situ if replaceable, looks like an option then, just bloody pain ...

How did you manage that then???

BTW, I have a selection of torque wrenches if needed, up to 220 lbft.

Off Top of my Head, Rear requires @248lbft... (and a fair bit more force/leverage to undo, 3/4" sockets & scaffold pole extension are my selected weapons of choice)

Havig just changed the oil pressure switch I had put the wheel on, and with a star wrench did the nut up, by hand, not standing on them or anything and it just went snap at the poit when I went to tighten it up proper like .... Dunno me own strength ! seriously, though, it does look like it had a fracture in it and I know not to do them up too tight !

you dont need to remove the hub
just hammer it from the outside to in
its just an inteference fit in its hole and is splined to stop it turning

Big Hammer

Sorry I wouldn't advise a hammer, once the thread is through the hub face, crank up with a socket to make true to what ever torque setting is required.

Thanks to all for suggestions ...

Gave it a gentle tap with the hammer out cam the stud, no need for hub removal, was easy to remove.

Got a chance to take the remains of the stud to a Ford delaer today who looked somewhat perplexed.

What are the hubs off, as the thread appears to be UNF and Ford studs are metric ? ? ?

Front hubs are Sierra. Give me a call Johno (didn't you get my voicemail?), you can have a stud out of my new hubs if you need it, can't have you missing Le Mans.

Or if you don't want help from your friends you could try giving Paul a ring. He's the guy I bought my new hubs from and he might have a spare stud. He'll certainly know exactly what the hub is off if not.

Hang on, this thread was started in February. Have you had the car off the road since then and missed all this lovely weather or been living really dangerously and just driving on 3 studs Johno?

Ian,

Missed your call and dropped you a note explaining why, my own stupidity.

Yes, I have done approx 1000 miles on 3 studs, no problem. Car is off the road again as the recently re-conned steering rack popped it's end seal on the A11 the other day covering the car in hot power steering fluid !

So while it's off the rod it's getting the full treatment before Le Mans, and yes, that means I'm missing the weather

The stud I have here has the following dimensions ...

13mm diameter
7mm spline
20mm shoulder before thread (incl. spline)

We think it is a UNF thread.

Have you tried your old nuts on your new studs Ian ?
