Hayward and Scott opinions?
Discussion
Hi all. Woke up too late to make the meet at Ace Cafe this morning - doh!
I've been looking for the perfect exhaust for my TT. Before anyone talks of the merits of Fabspeed, FVD, EuroPipe, AWE, or others (I've heard it all), I'm looking at the following specifically:
- 3" mandrel bent pipe
- 100 cell cats
- 3" straight-through muffler (not chamber type)
- all stainless throughout
Hayward and Scott quoted me a very competitive price to make exactly this. I was wondering if anyone had any experience with them? They seem to have a ton of knowledge and years of custom work, but I haven't spoken to any P car owners yet with their work.
Any thoughts?
Thanks

1. You've already made your mind up you don't want to purchase from the recognised leaders in the manufacture of 996 Turbo exhausts.
2. You get what you pay for.
3. Sorry if this bit sounds harsh, there maybe a reason for that, go figure.............

Super helpful, thanks.
You're welcome anytime
But hang on a minute, you've come on here saying "I've heard all there is to say about the recognised leaders so "talk to the hand 'cos the head ain't listening"
The responses you received were ; -
"ask on the Ferrari/ Lambo forum"
A 965 turbo owner who has had a custom wastgate pipe made up and was pleased with result.
A gentleman who knows a couple of 964 owners who are pleased with their exhausts.
And a gentleman who knows of people who've had exhausts made by them "but not fitted on Porsches"
Not exactly a representative cross section of satisfied 996 Turbo owners is it ?
But let me give you the benefit of my "brainless" view.
I bought a MK 1 GT3 last year. The previous owner had H & S make up some custom silencer boxes for it.
They were noisy, with large parts of the rev range "no go" areas at steady engine speeds, due to the droning and resonance produced by the exhaust.
I removed them from the car within days of buying it (they sold a treat on Ebay
), whilst reasonably made (no more than reasonable mind), they were heavy and crudely manufactured. I replaced them with standard GT3 silencers, not only was the car a pleasure to drive again, but b*gger me backwards me with a pitchfork, it seemed to have gained a rather large slice of torque into the bargain.
But surely that can't be right
the factory silencers that took hundreds of dyno runs to obtain the perfect balance between noise and horsepower/torque output, couldn't actually work better than an exhaust made by a "back street" manufacturer who makes exhausts for Subaru Imprezas could they ?
I hope you're happy with the results of what H & S produce for you (honestly) and chances are the Turbos exhaust will be easier to improve the flow on without having the ill effects on the torque/hp that a N/A engine can suffer from when a product is made by a manufacturer who has little or no knowledge of that specific engine (and thus the effects of modifying the exhaust on it will have)
But please my friend, be aware that the 996 Turbo engine is known to be an engine/exhaust package that is prone to droning when aftermarket systems are fitted to it.
A look on Rennlist in the early days of the 996 Turbo would have found numerous owners of Turbos with freshly fitted performance exhausts complaining about how noisy they were, and that they were going to remove brand X 'cos brand it was unbearable after an hour of driving the car and try brand Y instead.
No doubt most of these manufacturers have made revisions to their products and now produce a system that combines a pleasant noise without the resonance that seems to be a characteristic of the 996 Turbo engine/exhaust package.
All the above may not bother you one iota, for all I know you may be very happy with a noisy, droning, resonant system as long as it sounds "sportier". If that is the case you may well find the H & S system meets your criteria.
Irrespective of which route you may or may not decide to take, good luck and let us know the outcome

There we go, you're learning, you posted something helpful!
Just kidding, we're all friends here. I'm aware of the droning issue, and have owned a few high HP turbo cars before. Noise is something I can live with as it's not a daily driver. For the TT, the bigger pipes the better, then slap on some cats and straight through mufflers. As long as the stainless quality they use is good, and they mount it appropriately, I'm not real worried about the rest. I want the most power without going for straight race pipes - the "sporty" sound just happens to come with it, but I don't care for it either way.
Thanks for your feedback, will be sure to post up the review and pics once installed.

Any thoughts?
oxymoron ? hence my robust initial response........but I digress
I suggest you ask someone more knowledgeable (either modified TT owners on here or on Rennlist, or indeed any of the reputable tuners/indys in the UK) than myself about the merits of the 100 cell cats, as they MAY (IIRC) cause CEL issues.
Edited by slippydiff on Sunday 11th February 01:37
Yeah, there seems to be a 50/50 chance that it'll light up a CEL. The error code will be for a "Cat Efficiency", and won't impact performance. If I don't light it up, great. If I do, we'll then I'll just have to upgrade to a flash to get rid of it. Either way I'm ok with.
Good looking out. I'm looking forward to seeing how this turns out myself...

However they are not tuners, don't have a dyno etc. That's no disrespect to them you just need to be aware of that limitation
Above is correct. H&S have long experience with Subaru's and make superb systems for these. They have been in the business for a while and do make quality bespoke systems when commissioned to do so. If you do decide to use them perhaps you could get one of the more senior folk there to come out with you in the car for a test run with your current system. That way if the system they build has issues as mentioned in earlier postings you can at least get the same guy to experience these and have a benchmark to work to in order to iron out anything you find.
