Has anyone had experience of doing this? I'm thinking of giving it a try for up and coming passport photos as 5 of us need it doing so we thought we'd give it a try.

So for the people in the know...;

What are the rules and regs on doing this?

Does it have to be printed off on special paper or anything?

Any help you can give.

Cheers,

That Ginger Bloke

There are quite a few things now that govern what is or isn't acceptable in a passport photo. Can't remember what they all are, but I do remember that when I renewed my passport recently at the local Post Office, the lady in front of me had her photos refused, even though they were taken in the photo booth sitting in the Post Office foyer.

I'm sure someone will be along soon to point you towards a website that will give you all the information you need.

I've done it a few times for my friends and it's pretty simple if you follow the rules. I printed on Canon photo papers with my Canon printer and it was acceptable.

Canon photo papers....I have some 4" x 6" Canon Photo paper Pro that came free with a Canon printer that I sent returned as I didn't like it.

Also got some 5" x 7" Epson Premium Glossy Photo Paper that came with my new Epson printer that I have kept .

So this'll do then I hope.

What are the basic rules then Gemm?

* Taken in last 6 months,
* Resized to 45 millimetres (mm) high x 35 millimetres (mm) wide,
* Head and tops of shoulders,
* White sheet as background?

Any other tips etc...?

Google is your friend

www.passport.gov.uk/general_photos_standards.asp

identical;
recent (taken within the last month);
45 millimetres (mm) high x 35 millimetres (mm) wide (please do not trim your photographs to meet this condition);
taken against an off-white, cream or light grey plain background so that your features are clearly distinguishable against the background;
printed on low-gloss, plain white photo-quality paper (with no watermarks, embossing or printing on the back);
undamaged, for example, by creases from paperclips;
of you on your own (no toys, dummies or other people visible);
a close-up of your head and shoulders so that your head, from the bottom of your chin to your crown is between 29mm and 34mm high; and
clear of writing on the front and back.
The photographs must also:

be in sharp focus and clear;
have a strong definition between the face and background; and
be printed professionally. Photographs printed at home are not likely to be of an acceptable quality.
The photographs must show:

no shadows;
you facing forwards, looking straight towards the camera;
a neutral expression, with your mouth closed;
your eyes open and clearly visible (with no sunglasses or heavily tinted glasses, and no hair across your eyes);
no reflection or glare on your glasses, and the frames should not cover your eyes (you may find it easier to remove your glasses);
your full head, without any head covering, unless it is worn for religious beliefs or medical reasons; and
nothing covering your face. Please make sure nothing covers the outline of your eyes, nose or mouth.

Martin.

Aye I have that link posted above Nice recent shots by the way, although I'd change the car in the petrol station.

Yeah - we did ours. Allows you to keep going until you get the "right" expression etc.

One thing to watch out for though is that whilst your photo might be the exact measurement in PS - your printer might not do the same! We had ours perfect in PS (35x45 IIRC) but they were about 15% larger when printed!. Obviously the answer was to change the PS size by -ve 15%. But make sure you measure the printed output.

And 8 passport size photos fit nicely on a 6x4 paper. Just copy and paste the images onto a blank 6x4 background.

Photo Paper Pro has 'Canon' writen all over the back. Maybe that's not acceptable? I used Glossy Photo Paper.

You aren't wrong! The Epson stuff is the same, but I'm sure I have some photo paper about the place.

Did ours last year on glossy Epson photo paper - also accepted with no problem at all.
