I find this really important as I want to see (sometimes) and understand as much as I can about what's being done and why. You then know you can then trust them to do what's needed and about the time spent and hence charged for.
Without large overheads, the labour rates are good too, and they know they have to look after you properly so you'll come back, as it affects them directly if you don't.

Same to be said of Loe Bank Motors. 928's are their thing whereas some of the others are more known for work on 911's

Not used them, but you're right about 928s. G-boy on this thread asked about Boxsters, my reply more relevant to that really. I know Johnny at Unit Eleven tries to have as little to do with 928s as possible and would send enquiries Loe Bank's way. I think Mike at Sports & Classic has a similar view.

We are very lucky in the NorthWest as there are a lot of good independents for us to choose from. For boxster servicing in particular take your pick of those already mentioned above depending on how far away they are:
Hartech - Bolton
Ninemeister - Warrington
Sports & Classic - South Manchester/Cheshire
JMH Automotive - Holmes Chapel/Cheshire
