was just about to go out, had my camera strap round my neck so the camera was facing away from my side, went to go through the door and the lens hit the doorframe. At first i though it was alright and then the middle bit just fell outweeping . Dont think theres much hope of repair. Only had it for a few weeks aswell, now im stuck with the kit lens again which i hadnt used since i got the 50mm.

Bite the bullet... put the broken one in the bin, get another, move on.

Fifty quid, here . Sorted.

At least you used yours though - it hurts more when it's hardly used. I bought a new Canon S80 and dropped it (destroying it) within a week. I was very very p*ssed off... but replacing it asap and not talking about it helps.

Ahh... Well, there's this one, which is much less but that still has 3 days to go.

But if I was in your situation I would have a go at putting it back together. Just for the fun of it. If it doesn't work, then you can either foresake a few weeks driving licence for a new lens, get another temporary job, sell some stuff you didn't realise you didn't want on ebay, or use the kit one.

Anyway, I wouldn't worry about the driving licence, it's not as if you're going to be able to afford the car's insurance until you've finished school, finished University, got a job, paid off your student loan... probably about 2027 then.

Good advice right there, especially if you don't have a job/enough money for a new 50mm. A car will cost you a couple thousand at least, which is why I haven't got one yet.

I spent that couple thousand on camera stuff instead laugh

Sell the remnants of the 50mm on ebay - you'd be surprised what people pay for broken stuff on there.

You are 'stuck with the kit lens'??? I would never say that. You've got a lens, so get out with it and use it.

Any chance you could claim on the house insurance for a new lens. Also have you tried taking it back to where you bought it from, explain the circumstances and see if they can do anything for you? Frankly I would expect Canon lenses to be a bit more robust. I have several for my old film camera, and I wouldn't expect any of them to fall apart like that.

50f1.8 is only 60-70quid tops prolly below any excess house insurance has.

Its super quality for the price, but not very robust.

The current 50 1.8 is quite well known for falling apart in exactly this way. The two "halves" are only held together by some very flimsy couplings. The 1.4 (and 1.2L) are much better built. Unfortunately the 1.8 is so cheap for a reason.

I tried clipping it back in but a few wee plastic bits had fallen out and it doesnt seem to go in no matter how i do it.

looks like ill just have to wait until ive got enough money to get a new one. hopefully i can get a job in the summer and buy myself a nice zoom lens to go with it.

Mebe take it to an old skool back street camera shop & see if they know how to do it. Not worth spending much on it to fix but mebe worth a shot.

If it is under warranty, send it back and tell em it just fell out? To me a lens like that should be able to withstand a relatively minor knock. "Not fit for purpose" and all that.
