OK. I'm doing a few more track days this year. But I'm not addicted. I could stop any time, really.

So I'd like to capture my exploits for later analysis, posterity and general amusement. I've seen numbers of people attaching Camcorders to their vehicles by various means...but what's best?

Particularly: I'd like to attach a camcorder somewhere where I capture both the through the windscreen view but also gearchanges and a little of the steering.

So I intend to buy a *small* camcorder. Any ideas as to which one?

I have a Boxster S. Any ideas as to where to attach the thing. I've thought of stuffing it into the storage box under the windstop with the lens poking out from between the sliding covers...or perhaps a suction mount somewhere?

All ideas and thought welcome. I'm probably going to buy a camcorder tomorrow so HELP!

I use a suction mount by Manfrotto, professional kit and reasonably priced!

If you get the suction mount - there are two - go for the one that takes the slightly heavier weight - better to be safe!

Re Camcorder - I am a big fan of Sony - depends on how much you are willing to pay and what you want it for.

Cheers,

Mark

Cheers, Mark. I've ordered the kit from them. Now I just need a camera and some location for attaching it.

Any Boxster owners bolted the thing to the roll-hoops? Did you remove the "black plastic full of holes thing" or not?

As above - what are you going to use it for - purely in car action or other stuff?

Some of the camcorders have digital in which will allow you to plug in very small remote-head camera units which you can position within the car - not cheap though!

You ordered the mount already - you don't waste time!

Cheers

Mainly in-car action. And before this topic descends for the gutter I have a Boxster S and the cabin is too cramped for any of that hanky panky. Probably.

Sounds good. I suspect it'll be beyond my budget though. I don't really want to go higher than, say, £600. I also want the camera to be small both for in-car safety reasons and also because the Mrs would like to use it on holiday and on days out and so on.

Might as well get on with it. Track Day is on Saturday!

I really should be working, but....

Without any real research and IMHO the follwing looks good value:

www.rgbdirect.co.uk/ProductDetails.asp?ProductCode=1379 includes dv in/out

Same website - full list of cameras at reasonable prices. I have bought from these people in the past, with no problems.

...back to work

Looks the business, Mark. Thanks! I really don't want to get up above that price and it seems to have everything I need (USB etc).

I like Sony stuff as well. Generally high quality and nicely made.

Thanks!

Don't be so nasty to Don. I looked up this part in a Porsche workshop manual and it said:

"SchwarzPlastikDingerMitVielHolenFurHarrstyleProtekzion", part number 986.123.453.666

The remote head units are not that expensive - from about £50 to £150 depending on spec. Mine uses a standard A/V in connector to the camcorder so I think they would probably work on any camcorder with A/V in capability. Mine's a bottom of the range digital one so you don't need to spend a lot of cash to get this working.

Through work, I can get any Canon camera/camcorder at cost price.

Have a look on their website and let me know the model you are interested in and I will give you a price.

Thanks for that...unfortunately I already bought one! Thanks for the kind offer though.

I am now the proud owner of a full suction/clamp in-car mounting kit from B HAGUE and a Canon MV550i complete Digital Video kit. So I'll post a link to whatever I manage to produce sometime after Easter.

Thanks for all the support and help everyone.

Anyone who want to see an enormous collection should take a look at

I wouldn't mind a copy of your Coombe video. I'll be videoing from the front of my car, but it would be nice to have the whole event covered from behind me too

I find that seeing the driver working the steering wheel and gear lever and seeing crash helmets being thrown around by the lateral G gives more of an idea what is going on inside the cockpit, makes it a bit more entertaining to watch.

LOL. So what makes you think I'll be behind you then, John? LOL.

No problem, mate. If we're out in the same session I'd be glad to swap tapes/cds at some point.

Seriously - I'd advisen not allowing the video making to affect one's driving (e.g. trying to get behind or in front of a particular car). Just enjoy the day and whatever footage happens to be available is a bonus...
