Help please with temp gauge + ECM

Sent a post on thermofans last week. Checked the thermostat for the temp gauge on weekend. I need some help. Near the water lines (near front LHS of engine) is a thermocouple (just poking between the timing belt), it has a dodgy connection, when disconnected the temp gauges drops to zero and goes back up when connected. Is this the same thermocouple for the fans ?.

Also how is it removed for cleaning. Got a post back saying this can be removed but it looks like it needs to be unscrewed and need to drain the coolant.

if this is not the thermofans thermocouple then where is it ?.

Also according to everything I have seen mine is a 1990 Non SE turbo. First registered in 1992. I wanted to reset the ECM and looked for the fuse next to the fuel pump fuse but my manual only shows 2 fuel pump fuses 15A. There are only relays on the LHS of this. Any explanation apart from mine does not have ECM. Its got a SCC082910 JHA 62427 VIN no.

Any help or suggestions.

That sender is for the temp gauge only, as you discovered.

It screws out of the thermostat housing, you'll lose some water, but not a lot.

If yours is a 1990 non-se turbo, it's probably mechanical fuel injection, so I'm not sure it has an ECM like an SE does.

The sender for the ECM on SE models is in the inlet manifold towards the rear of the engine.

Thanks John, now I know I need to get some manuals.

So its only the SE that have ECM - O.K. that would explain it.

Sorry Jason, but according to your VIN, your car is an '88. If you send me a pic of it I will be able to confirm visually as well. It might have a '90 compliance plate just like it has a '92 reg, but the car was manufactured in '88. If you give me the engine number, I can even tell you the month.

Now it will be easier for you to ask questions/work on your car as you know that it has the mechanicals of a Giugiaro car, not a Stevens (the '88 is a G car in S skin).

From memory, ECM were not introduced until mid '89.

Agree with andecorp. The no.s 910 in the VIN number stand for engine type which is a 2.2L Turbo, the letter J stands for year which is 1988. H is for Hethel and A is for something about Australia and chassis no? So guess thats enough info for a rethink on what your doing.
