If a stone falls off a back of a tractor and damages my windscreen with a whopping huge crack, have I got any comeback financially?

It depends whether it was part of a cargo or load being transported or whether it was just one picked up by the tyres and let fly later. If it's part of a load then yes. Otherwise I doubt it.

had the windscreen on one of my cars smashed by a bolt falling off the back of an AA van of all things...was a very old car too, pre safety glass...and on the A!M...bloody exciting! (and my face look amusing for a few days)

The AA told me to 'sod off' ...but politely!

If its something he's carrying yes, if only because it should be secure/covered. If it wasn't you can threaten him with negligence claims.

A witness or two would have been useful, plus any other evidence you can get.

Yes, technically he's committed the offence of insecure load. But proving it is a different matter. Did the tractor have a registration plate and if so did you take the number? If you did you can pay a fee to DVLC to obtain the keeper details (and insurance I believe) and claim against his cover). Chances are they'll refuse to play ball though.
For the sake of all the hassle involved, bite the bullet and use your policies windscreen cover.
