Wireless card help needed? Please help!!!

Bought myself a wireless card for my laptop today to connect to my home router! I'm usually not that bad with computery type stuff but having loads of trouble connecting it.

I have run the install program on the disc supplied but cannot pick up any wireless connections - my mum has two on her laptop (ours and next doors).

Can someone pls give me some advice on how to get the to work.

Take all the firewall stuff off etc, pair them manually (or let windows do it) and then re activate the firewall
