Door speakers are 6.5" or 165 mm - sadly the likes of Pioneer et al have 'upgraded' their 6.5" line to 170 mm somewhere near the start of this millennium and these do not fit... Oh, and I have noticed it's getting very difficult to buy a set of door speakers in the lower/mid price ranges nowadays that doesn't feature 'chav my ride' styling...

Rear speakers will be whatever size whoever fitted them: they weren't fitted as standard.

Had this problem too and have left the original Pioneers in as I can't face sullying the lovely beast with god awful chromed / LED-ed / spiky / horned / silly shaped rubbish.

yes

Mine had been fitted with relatively low line 6.5" Pioneers in the front (aftermarket: receipt tells me stereo was installed in 2002, so not too bad) and as one of the grilles was missing, I thought it'd be a good moment to upgrade. Took me all of 15 mins in the local big electronics warehouse to realise it's not going to happen. hehe Instead, I'll leave the grille off the nearside speaker too, and paint the visible screw heads black.

I too have spent the last year hunting around for speakers. It would seem the only ones that will fit in the doors are JL audio 6" speakers (http://mobile.jlaudio.com/products_co However they are expensive at around £120 the pair.

The others that I found that fitted are JVC, http://jvcmobile.co.uk/product.php?pr although these are a tight fit and don't sound too good either. I cannot seem to find any others to fit, unless you do not bother with the grills.

If anyone has found any others that fit please let me know.

Front door speakers are not 16.5 or 17cm, they are 16cm which makes them damn awkward to replace.

I have recently replaced mine with Infinity 6012i's, which are great sounding speakers and unlike the JL's, don't cost £120 - should be able to find them for around £60. Still used the JL grilles though as the infinity ones were a bit too big to fit. I went with the same speakers in 13cm for the back, and they sound great.

That varies from brand to brand actually, the Pioneer TS-G1645s in mine are listed as 165 mm or 6.5". OTOH, the actual size difference with the 17xx series speakers that replaced them, is vastly more than 5 mm. Their current 13 cm/ 5.25" offerings have grilles not much smaller than the old 16/16.5cm...

Well, pretty sure the JL's are 16cm. And I know the Infinity's I bought are 16cm too, and fit in the JL grilles, which are exactly the same size as the space in the door moulding where the grille fits... Not saying others don't fit, just saying I know I wouldn't buy a 16.5cm or 17cm speaker without offering it up to the door first and making sure it would fit, because space is tight (i.e. mail ordering a bigger speaker is a bit of a risk).

Well, that's good adice in any case as the mounting depth can be an issue too, especially with some speakers a bit higher up the audiophile ranks (big fr*gg*ng magnet assemblies and all)...

I wouldn't have thought you can buy the JL grills separately though - can you?
In which case if I put Infinities in mine I would have no grills!

I think I will have to carry on looking around for speakers. Cheers Ads

Just find a dealer with a decent range of speakers, take your original speaker out and take it to the shop and ask them what will fit. Then, if they have something you think matches size wise, you're sorted. Or you could thank them for their help, go home and order them on the web much cheaper, as a rule... but at least you know they'll fit...

Thanks, I did try my local one, but they didn't seem to have much stock. I'll have to find a dealer that has a wider range and try there!

They're compact, and they're not "bling" - a lot of current speakers, especially lower price ones, have incredbly flash plasticky grilles that a) look minging and b) are too big to fit the hole in the door moulding where the grille has to fit. So often people will stick with the original JL grilles (assuming their car has the JL speakers, and they've blown - not a lot of point changing them if they're OK, as they are fairly decent £100-plus speakers) and fit the new speakers inside the old grilles.

Oh I understand (and agree about the bling grills on modern speakers) , mine came from the factory with Pioneer speakers.
