PS3 purchased in Japan
Discussion
hi,
i'm told that to buy a full spec PS3 in japan costs around £250 while they are to be around £450 in the UK. i'm going to tokyo with work in april. if i get one there will it work in the uk?
my concerns include (but not limited to)...
power supply
dvd software
game software
video signal to screen
others i've not thought of.
anyone know?
cheers, si.

I'm pretty sure it runs on NTSC over there so you would need an appropriate television.
Games also run on that system so you would need to get japanese games from somewhere like www.play-asia.com which works out cheaper anyway.
No idea about power supply.

Power: OK, you can plug in a standard kettle lead and it'll work.
DVD: Japan is DVD region 2, same as UK. However the BluRay regions are different, so you'll have to import BluRays from Japan/Asia
Game Software: Worldwide, region free. So you can use your UK purchased games on the machine.
Video Signal: As long as you have an HDTV or a standard telly that can handle NTSC, you'll be fine.
Other issues:
No backwards compatibility with Euro PS2 games.
Playing Sony games online will be rubbish as you will be connected to the Japanese servers and have some lag issues. Also, since Motorstorm in Japan doesn't have online, you won't be able to play it online AT ALL... even if you buy the Euro version!Thankfully you won't have any trouble with other software companies like EA, Ubisoft, Sega etc as they don't use dedicated servers.
Oh and another thing: Due to Japan's recent laws about gore/blood in games, you won't see the super-sick stuff. Your Japanese machine will edit it out.

What that guy said - look at the playstation forums and you'll find a number of people who import and then realise they will have to import blurays and can't use their ps2 games. pay more here, get more here
By the way, PS3 sales are doing pretty poorly in Japan right now, you can pick up a used 20GB PS3 for 38000yen... that's £161! or new for 39980yen, £169. The strange thing is, I live in Japan, paid around £225 for my 60GB PS3 and I feel overcharged, I can't imagine what it's like having to whack down £425

the 20gb is the poorly selling one - thats because ut dosen't have any wifi, hence why we're not getting it here.
