Hi Chaps,

Got a bit of a challenge ahead. I've got thousands of MP3s that are arranged in a file structure like this:

Artist/Album/Song.mp3

Now what I want to do is take the MP3s out of their existing locations and put them all in one directory, without filing them into subfolders.

If I were to attempt this manually it would take weeks. Does anyone know of a piece of software that could automate this task?

one way would be to use winzip to create a big ZIP archive.

you can then unzip to a new location and tell winzip to ignore paths and sub-folders.

this assumes your on a windows machine and have enough disk space!

Find the highest level directory above where they're located and press <F3> then search for *.mp3 Press <CTRL> A to select them all and then <CTRL> X to cut them.

Navigate to new location and press <CTRL> V. Might take a while but that should do the job.

ETA the files won't actually be moving as long as you stay on the same disk so space shouldn't be an issue. You're only modifying the FAT unless you cut across discs.

Wow fast response!

Both methods could do the job just fine I think!

Hmm... will the search method work over a local network? I'm guessing so, but can't try it until I get home.

Yup, but it'll take much much longer to perform as the data will actually be moving instead of just the FAT altering.
