Bringing in a bike from Italy?
Discussion
Hello community.
Have posted in Pistonheads as I also have a sports car, but not on the biker forum, so basically new here.
I’m an ex-biker that would like to start riding again, and I have an old '96 GSXR750, (my ex-racebike, converted back to road) in Italy.
Which do you reckon would be the best/easiest/cheapest/quickest
way to bring the bike (and all the three boxes of spares) from North Italy to Aberdeen?
Do you think I really need to legally import it, pay duties and all? Or can I just fly there and ride it in or tow it?
The idea would be to later re-convert it to a track bike and use it for trackdays.
Any suggestions?.

As said, no duty or tax, even if it were outside the EU as it's over 1 year old. Presumably it 'should' legally be registered*, taxed etc as a UK bike if you are a UK resident, which will involve some expense and hassle but if it's Italian registered you should be able to use it for a certain time before legally having to change the reg (6 months?) but if you're going to use it solely on the track then you won't need to register it.
As for getting it here, quickest way would be to fly over and ride it back (only you know how 'quick' that might be
) but you may struggle with the boxes of parts, would think it would cost min £300 to ship it over? but even if you've got a van and fetch it yourself it'll probably cost about the same, unless you're going on Holiday or something anyway.
Riding it would be the most enjoyable anyway, although I'd leave it a month or so until it get's a bit warmer before making the trip.

*I'm sure you could ride an Italian registered bike in the UK for some time without actually having a problem (or FPN's) but wouldn't condone that sort of behaviour, no, Oh no definitely not, not me, no way .....
Yes, riding it back is an idea, but then have to do something about the boxes.
Should be fun, but it's a long way, and I know I won't be on top form (reactions, skills, etc.)
Still, it may all click within the first couple hundred miles (or my bad back could make it a nightmare).
Was thinking that there are some companies that organize going and coming to european trackdays. Maybe some poeple here have used them? could they be willing to take my bike & boxes back only?
